Calling all Bumpers!

I have been givin the family crib... It is over 100 yrs old and very special...We are currently refinishing it and now I need to find a small crib mattress for it. By small we are looking about 24"x 42" . My parents tell me, what they had for me was to small for the crib; But what I am finding these days are way to big (I can work with to small).... I do not care about Toddler bed crap.... I just want to use this crib.

Pont is, anyone know where I can find a smaller crib mattress????

Sorry for bad grammer and spelling.... kinda dumb... :)

Re: Calling all Bumpers!

  • You know why you can't find a crib mattress for this crib?  Because it's old and unsafe.  It's even too old to be on the recall list.  Putting your baby in an antique crib is a BAD idea.

    Yes

I'm not knocking family tradition or whatever and I don't know what kind of restorations you are doing to the crib, but I doubt it's enough to make it safe enough to pass any kind of modern-day safety inspection.

ETA - You should NOT get a mattress that is too small. Why? Because of SIDS. Everything about your plan just screams unsafe to me.

    This and this.

Please DO NOT use this crib, it is a terrible idea.  Your comment "I can work with too small" is scary.  Again, please don't use this crib.

  • Even if this crib is determined to be safe for infants, which I'm sure it's not, the mattress is supposed to be snug otherwise your baby can get their hands stuck under the mattress and possibly even suffocate because of it. Not to mention that you would have to have special sheets made so they are tight fitting.

  • Check out this site to see if your antique crib meets current safety specifications:

     https://www.cpsc.gov/cpscpub/pubs/5020.html

I suggest calling the hotline if there is anything "different" (paint/metal/drop sides) on your crib that is not mentioned on the website.  That site is just a summary of important crib specifications so it won't cover every possible dangerous thing that could be found on an antique crib.

And please, do not look for a mattress that is too small.  You don't want your baby to get trapped between the mattress and the crib and suffocate, which is a very real danger of using a mattress that is too small for the crib.

Look, I'm no alarmist.  I'm a very laid back mother.  But please please PLEASE do not put your baby in a 100 year old crib.

     What she said.

Please do not use the crib for your baby. It is an accident waiting to happen. If you want a piece of the crib in the room for sentimental reasons then take a piece of it and make something out of it. I don't know what but please do not use it as a crib.

  • Please don't use a crib mattress that is too small for your crib. That's just asking your baby to find a way to suffocate.

  • Because of a whole myriad of reasons, both visible to the eye and obvious and possibly not apparent at all, PLEASE do not use the crib. Perhaps you could continue to refinish it and use a piece/pieces of it as a decoration? Putting your child in a piece of furniture that doesn't meet today's safety standards (which were put in place for VERY good reasons) is a very bad idea.

  • I had to fight with my whole family not to use a 36 year old crib. My mom argued that 4 babies have survived it, but why risk it ya know? It's not up to safety standards and I am sure you want what is safe for your baby.

  • I'm waiting for the "Generations of babies slept in this crib and we all turned out JUST FINE" argument.

  • You should use the crib for decorating purposes!  Maybe use it to place some cute stuffed animals, blankets or other baby/nursery items!  Sounds like it is fairly small, so it would make a cute piece to just put in the nursery, but not to use for a sleeping child!

I love family heirlooms, and if this thing has lasted that long in your family, that is amazing.  I just don't think it would be good to use for a baby.

Ditto this.  Crib and bedding standard weren't put into place because a bureaucrat had nothing better to do and wanted to put the antique industry out of business.  They were put in place because of the babies that were injured, hospitalized or killed as a result of a lack of a standard.

Perhaps refinish and use it as a doll or stuffed animal crib or something.  It's time to retire the crib to "antiquity" status.  Decoration only.

  • I think by now she gets the point that if her baby isn't poisoned by the lead paint it will be a victim of SIDs.

why don't you take the crib apart and use a side as a wall hanging or something other than the death trap.

  • hmmm i don't actually agree with everyone else. there is a possibility the crib isn't safe. but there is also a possibility it is.

I would find a professional to check it out.... i know the people who do lamaze class's in my area can check it out. but idk about fl. point being....

have someone who knows about cribs tell you if its safe or not.

I'm sorry, but no 'professional crib inspector' is going to look at a crib built in 1910 and say, 'ABSOLUTELY!!!!  Go ahead and put your defenseless newborn in there!  What could possibly go wrong?!!'

  • crotchpheasant - another new favorite word for me!

I just realized why I don't ever get any work done... at work!  If I devoted my day to what I am supposed to do, I would miss out on sweet words like this.

Is there really still an argument about this topic?  Pretty sure that 99% of us who are thinking with our noggins today already decided for OP that this is a dumb idea to use the crib.

For those of you who think it is a 'good' idea... I know of some fantastic antique stores in Amish Country Ohio where you could find a sweet deal on a crib from 1876!

  • Hey! I was reading that thread! How dare someone delete two hours worth of posts. I was actually interested in what people had to say..

To OP - I gotta agree that this can't be safe... ESPECIALLY with a mattress that is too small. No good could come of that.

  • I am going to repost this b/c I think it's important for OP to know.

My mother gave my little brother lead poisoning in utero b/c she had sanded in the house and although she used a mask, the dust was in our home.  She didn't know that she was pregnant til she was 5 months (her last kid was 8 years prior and thought menopause, they told her no more after my brother) along.

He had very high levels at birth and was sick for a long time, he is ok now though.

If you do refurbish this crib for decor, please do it outside, wear a mask and wash your clothes and self after.

  • OP - Just curious - why the would you ask a question on here, only to delete half of the responses?  People are obviously concerned about your child's safety...perhaps you should take the advice.

If you delete a response, you have the option to delete all daughter responses so if someone had clicked reply to that particular response, their post will get deleted with the one that they were replying to.

  • Brutal DD!!

That should really not be allowed, especially to delete responses.  If it was only for you to read it would be a private message.

    Boo-urns bad sport!

  • OP didn't delete the post...

Twinter (sp?) did... She deleted all of her posts, which then deleted all of the posts that were replies from hers!

  • I'm very late, but I can't NOT chime in on this.  Everyone is right.  The crib should absolutely not be used.

I am a very laid back mother, but the one thing I won't compromise on is safety.  You have to be very careful with cribs and carseats.

Instead, how about an antique/heirloom rocker, high chair, changing table, etc?
