nap & bedtime trouble

DD has been bucking naps & bedtime for over a month now.  Naps are breif unless we hold her & bedtime is late (10/11) which usually takes a few attempts of nursing to sleep before she's really out.  She naps like a dream for the sitter though.  I have long thought perhaps we are waiting too long, she gets overtired & it's too late.  I've tried laying her down the instant she rubs her eyes.  We put her in a darkened room w/ her aquarium music.  she's content to lay there for about 10-15min but then begins to fuss & then cry harder & harder until we go get her.  According to a post on 3-6 that I participated in yesterday, we could be waiting too long to lay her down.  Has anyone here found this to be true?

DD is generally pretty happy even w/ the lack of naps but I gotta believe she needs more sleep than she's getting.  Is it possible for her to get rest while breastfeeding?  she almost always nurses w/ her eyes closed so maybe she makes up for lost sleep during these sessions?

Re: nap & bedtime trouble

  • How long is she awake before you put her down for her first nap?  I used to wait for signs until I realized that my DS didn't really give good cues and would instantly switch to overtired.  Now I start his naptime routine 1.5 hours after he wakes up.  I sit in the rocking chair, read him a story, rock, sing, then try to nurse him to sleep.  This was working well for awhile.  If we waited any longer, we missed the window of opportunity. We still struggle with naps later in the day, but we generally ahve success with the first one.  Also, he wakes up 40 minutes after he goes down.  It's like clockwork. So Around the 35 minute mark I go to his crib and wait til he stirs.  The second he does, I pick him up and rock him for about 15 minutes.  This sometimes helps prolong his naps.  Have you tried any of these things?  If you haven't already, you should read the No Cry Nap Solution.

  • During the week DD is w/ the sitter, so I don't know her exact routine there, but she usually takes a bottle about 2hrs after waking up @ home & then takes her morning nap there.  I think we have to try putting her down even sooner than we are because by the time she's showing signs of being tired, I think it's too late.
