Nella Cordelia?

There is a very moving story in the latest issue of Parents magazine...however putting the emotional aspect aside I cannot get past this child's name...

Nella Cordelia

Pretentious enough?

That and this couple had monogramed favor boxes of jordan almond and monogramed glasses to give to their visitors...who does that?!

(Then again maybe I'm just trashy :o)  )

Re: Nella Cordelia?

  • Lets just say I am not a giant Kelle Hampton fan, but wtf? Nella isn't pretentious and maybe she is a big Anne of Green Gables fan or something.

The rest, yes, she goes way overboard. Champagne in the delivery room is a bit much for me.

  • I don't think the name flows. It looks like Nella Cordella at first, which is bad because it would rhyme.

Nella isn't my style. I thought that the BTN info was pretty funny. I had never noticed this on a name before:

    NELLA

    Gender: Feminine

    Usage: English

    Pronounced: NEL-?

    Elaborated form of NELL

I think I can see why you would think Cordelia is pretentious, but it doesn't strike me in the same way. I really like that name.

The favors thing doesn't bother me. If whomever is hosting her shower has the money to throw around like that, I think that's great. She was probably just trying to make it memorable for her guest of honor.

ETA: Oh, I gather from PP's response these were not favors at a baby shower. They were for people who came to visit in the hospital. This still doesn't really bother me. It's kind of like passing out cigars.
  • I think both names are great, but not together.  Haha Cordelia totally makes me think of Anne of Green Gables too!

  • Never heard of the name Nella before, but I don't think Cordelia is pretentious at all -- how is it any more elaborate than Victoria or Isabella or any of the other similar names?

And re: jordan almonds -- some people are with it and together like that. It doesn't hurt anyone. My cousin's a party planner and she totally gets off on making up little bags of things for even simple dinner parties. You hsould see what she gives her trick or treaters! It makes her happy and it's a hobby -- some people bike or crochet or garden -- she makes little presents and scrapbooks. Whatever works.

I'll be lucky if I send out birth announcements.  LOL

  • I like the name Nella, actually. I think it's sweet and different, much like the baby herself! Cordelia was Kelle's grandmother's name, so I automatically like it. I don't love the flow, but it's special to them. I don't mind the favors at the birth. You gotta do what you gotta do to make the experience as enjoyable as possible!

    Edited for grammatical error.

  • Kelle Hampton is over the top (to say the least).  When I saw the pictures of her DD's recent birthday party (fairies was the theme I think?) I couldn't believe it.  I kept wondering where she gets the TIME?!?!?

As for favors in the delivery room - yea, that is over the top IMO.  I can see how things are a hobby but you have to be careful and not to cross the line between "cute hobby nice gesture" and "self important".

As for Nella Cordelia - I think it is fine.  I like both names but it is the flow that sounds a tad off to me.

  • I like both names, Actually, I LOVE Cordelia, and tried to talk DH into it a few times. Although for me, Elinor Cordelia flows better.

A little over the top with the favors and such, but eh, whatever.

  • Cordelia was her grandmother's name BTW.

  • Well, as pp have said, she is a bit over the top with everything she does. As for the name, I believe the middle name is to honor her grandmother. I think Nella is a cute name. I think it sounds more country than pretentious.
  • I like both names, but not together. It sounds like it fits her though.

  • I actually think Nella Cordelia is a darling name. Embarrassed

But I'm totally with you on the monogramed glasses and favor boxes. That's a little obnoxious.

  • Most of us on the Bump know the story of baby Nella, and I've never thought anything about the name before.

Some of the other stuff is over the top, yeah, but I think the name is fine, even if it's nms.

I'll take Nella Cordelia over Nevaeh Miracle any day of the week. ;)

  • She is a tad over the top, but I love reading her blog. I don't think the name flows well either but really who cares? It obviously means a lot to them and that is what matters.

  • Cordelia is her grandmother's name... so no, not pretentious. PP also made a good point... is Cordelia really any more pretentious than Victoria or Isabella?

Nella is nms... but I don't hate it. And I think Nella is extremely plain, so it kind of balances out with Cordelia. I actually always thought Nella Cordelia flowed well and was kinda pretty.

All the delivery room stuff was a bit much, I have to say... but Kelle Hampton is a bit much herself (although I do like reading her blog occasionally...)

  • Wow, WTH. I know I judge names, but this is a perfectly normal name. With non-cre8ive spellings.

And I totally would do that...she was celebrating the birth of her daughter. Sounds like a good thing to me. This might have been better as a FFFC.

Hahahahaha...OMG monogramed Jordan almonds...my eyes are bleeding! Stick out tongue

    You're kidding right?

Nevaeh Miracle is a beautiful name! It should be spelled Nyvaeh Myrykle though. For real.

I know exactly who you are talking about and while I really don't like the name Nella, but there is absolutely nothing wrong with the name Nella Cordelia. It sounds like the name an educated person would choose, rather than Caylee/Hayley/Jayden/Caden. Some people call that pretentious, I call it smart.

The champagne, I admit, was a little weird, but then I don't drink, ever, so that just wouldn't be my style. But giving out little favors? I think that's an adorable idea and the fact that this mother, who already had young children at home, was organized enough to have planned out and made favors for her guests is pretty impressive. Something to aspire to, rather than mock.

  • I've seen this thread name about 30 times over the last 5 hours, and I still read it as "Nella Cordella" every time I see it. There must be something wrong with me.
  • I don't know who Kelle Hampton is but all I can think about is how I want to eat jordan almonds now.

  • I've been following her blog since Nella was born and never thought twice about the name. Its a pretty name for a beautiful little girl. Like PPers have said, she likes to do things over the top. I wish I could pull off the stuff she does. And on a side note, where the f is my Parents magazine? It still hasn't come and I am seriously getting annoyed.
