3rd Trimester

Tick bite while pregnant?

In all of my 26 years, I've never even seen a tick and in the past month, I've pulled off 2 of those very teeny tiny ticks. Ugh! Since I was a bit clueless about them, stupid me started to google and I've completely freaked myself out worrying about Lyme Disease, especially since the 2 pulled off of me most resemble the type that carries the disease. My OB saw the first bite and told me to call her if I had flu like symptoms or the area grew (it didn't)and she would start me on antibiotics. It' just a small pink bump now. I see her again this Friday for a checkup so I'll show her the second bite I got last week. Does anyone know anything about ticks or if I should go ahead and ask to start some sort of preventive antibiotic??

Re: Tick bite while pregnant?

  • Keep an eye on your body and any associated symptoms. I had a tick bite around 4-5 months and it completely grossed me out. Just keep track of how you are feeling. Of course, follow your doctor's recommendations. Better safe than sorry.

That's what my OB said. I feel fine so far but I read that symptoms may not start right away... ughhhh. Did you take any kind of antibiotic or no? I hate to ask for anything when I feel fine but I also don't want something "brewing" and miss the window to kill whatever is there. And yes, I'm seriously grossed out and feel like I have something crawling on me constantly!

  • Definitely keep your doc apprised of the situation. My dog had Lyme this year (despite having been vaccinated against it and getting her Frontline every month like clockwork) and my vet took one look at me and my belly and told me to have my OB test me for it -- because I am obviously always in the woods for my dog and I could have been bitten at some point too. Negative, thank God. Lyme is a terrible disease.

(Luckily, my dog is one of the 40% non-symptomatic canines, and we got her treated right away. But my friend's dog suffered severe joint damage as a result.)

  • I did not take anything, but kept an eye on how I was feeling for a while. DH and a few family members have had Lyme's Disease, so we were looking for certain symptoms. Ticks are very common in my area and unfortunately it happens. Bleh. I hate the creepy crawly feeling. I didn't get it checked out because the spot of the bite after I pulled the creeper off seemed fine and no indication for worry. Good luck!

This is literally the exact same thing you posted a few days ago?

WTF...is this a bump screw-up or are you trying to up your post count?  I'm confused.

  • Um yeah, I'm trying to "up my post count" b/c that means so much to me.

But really, no, just getting more opinions since that was posted with just the Dec. moms.

Sorry that it bothers you so much! Smile

  • Nope, doesn't bother me..I was seriously wondering what the he!! was going on with the bump since it seems to repost things a million and a half times...it's early, I'm uncaffeinated and pregnant and I forgot to add my little smiley face after the post count comment.  Wink

  • Ha, no, I did post it again. Just asking for other's experiences.
  • You shouldn't have to worry about lyme disease unless you get a "bullseye" appearance around the bite area and this gets huge! you'll have a big raised red bump in the middle then it will look kind of normal then a huge red ring along the outside.
  • It sounds like it may have been a Lone Star tick. Those do not carry Lyme but they do carry a related illness called STARI. Symptoms to look out for, for both illnesses:

First and foremost, watch the area for a developing rash. It can be in the "bull's eye" pattern or it can be something that breaks out elsewhere.

    Extreme fatigue

Joint soreness and really bad headaches

I've received many a tick bite over the past few years because I was working in the field (forestry/entomology). I'd estimate about 15 in the past 2 years. They were all Lone Star and I have not developed any illness (that I know of). However, I did have an employee develop STARI and she developed all of the previously mentioned symptoms about a month after the bite. I believe that it was an adult tick that bit her though. The ones that bit you sound like larval ticks. I believe that larval deer ticks do not transmit Lyme because they haven't had the chance to acquire Lyme in their life, yet. You would have been their first meal. Of course, I can't be sure without seeing the tick :)

I'm going to throw this out there, even though I know that you did not do this:

NEVER, EVER smother or burn a tick that is attached to you!! It will cause the creature to regurgitate whatever is in its system, thereby giving you whatever illness it may have been carrying. You did the right thing by pulling it out with tweezers. Always try to yank it out by its head.

Ticks are less likely to spread illness if you catch them early, so just keep vigilant for more!
