Poll: Bottles

We have chosen the Dr Brown bottles for the boys.  When registering, I wasn't sure if to get the short/fat ones or the tall/skinny ones... so I registered for both.  And surprisingly got them both along w/ their cooresponding nipples.

I was thinking we only need one "model" but am not sure.  What do you ladies prefer... and why?

ETA - sorry for confusion - both bottles hold the same amount of liquid (8oz).  I will have a few of the 4oz avail, but the majority I plan on having 8oz... just don't know if short/fat or tall/skinny.

Re: Poll: Bottles

  • We use the Playtex Drop-In's, but I'm guessing the short vs. tall thing has to do with how much liquid they hold, right? If so, we used the short ones after I stopped BFing for a few months (form 4 months - 6 months, maybe)...but as she got bigger, she needed more milk = bigger bottles. We don't use the small bottles at all now, so I would suggest getting more big than little.

    HTH :)

  • I am an Avent fan...used them w/DD and have them now to use w/LO.  I plan to exclusively breastfeed and use the bottles when someone else needs to feed him if I am not here or night feedings for DH to help....but probably not until later on.  My DD did not have any issue going from  breast to that bottle/nipple.  I received a Dr Browns (short fat one) as a gift when we registered...but have not used them yet.

  • Playtex Mama here too =) And I went for the bigger bottles since I knew they would be used much longer.

  • We got Dr Brown for both kids and I sworn by them. Personally, I would just get the tall/ skinny ones that are 8oz. You can use those until the boys transition to a sippy cup. I would invest in different sizes/ flows of nipples though.

Also remember the more bottles you have and use the more bottles you need to wash! And after a long day with both boys or you working the last thing you want to do is wash 5 billion bottles and the peices to them.

  • I would just get the tall skinny ones.  It will seem like feeding a newborn with a big gulp in the beginning but they outgrown the smaller ones so fast that it doesn't make financial sense to get both.  BTW - get the Dr Brown gadgets for cleaning.  Those bottles are a huge PITA to wash and they have so many pieces that you really do use those for that brand.

  • I'd go with short and fat...easier to wash...you can stick your hand/sponge in them...you need a bottle brush for the tall, skinny ones. I wouldn't go overboard with bottles...I had a TON of Dr. Brown's and Camy hated them...we actually tried all the brands and the only one she liked was playtex drop-ins.

  • I belive the smaller/wider ones are also 8oz (both types come in 4 or 8 oz)...the shorter ones are wider to be able to hold more milk.

  • I only use Dr. Brown Bottles. We got the short and tall ones. We have probably used the short ones a hand full of times. So we went and bought more skinny tall ones and just use those. I love the Dr. Brown bottles, but they are a bit of a pain when it comes to cleaning them due to all the parts. We also used tommee tippee, but Jacob hated the nipple and it made him gassy.

  • I used both.  Both hold the same amount of liquids, but the nipples are different.  The tall skinny ones have a nipple that looks kind of like a triangle (no point obviously) and the shorter fatter ones have the look of an actual nipple the puffy part and then the nipple part. (if that makes sense). Both mine had no problem switching from either bottle and breast.

This is what I wanted to hear... a "scientific" reasoning for the 2 sizes.  Thanks.  I'll be returning the tall bottles then... even though they prob take up less space in the diaper bag when travelling.  Oh well... I guess I'll need a "lunchbox" of sorts for longer trips.

    Thanks everyone for your input.

  • i think the biggest difference is that the shorter, wider ones are easier to clean and use with baby
  • I had both and quickly threw all the long/skinny ones out (well gave them away really). I didn't like them, they were harder to clean, mix (since you have to stir the formula in those bottles, not shake), etc.
