Soy Formula (and boys)

Hi all-  I mostly BF, but supplement with formula a few times a day.  My ped. recommends soy formula.  For the first round of formula, we followed the suggestion, but then it dawned on me that I stopped drinking soy milk over two years ago (DH still drinks it) because I had read about phytoestrogens and other things about how it is processed in the US that cause concern.  I had also seen a tv show that showed little boys (kids, not infants) getting breasts after consuming lots of it. Anyway, a friend of mine had recommended Enfamil AR b/c that's what her daughter had used and it had a little rice in it.  Well, we got that, but my ped. said not to use it, but use a different milk based formula.  We listened, but DS has been fussy, so we broke down (or rather I did b/c DH is not worried) today and got more soy.  I'm still concerned that at this age when DS's hormones are still in flux that using soy formula will mess things up.

Am I being irrational?

Re: Soy Formula (and boys)

  • I would use what the pedi told me to.  If soy was so bad for infants, they wouldn't make soy formula.

  • mehhh... my pedi told me not to use soy bc of the high estrogen levels. I wouls think a few times a day wouldn't be a big deal, but what is the reason for the recommendation? Soy is usually used as a last resort. My LO was on soy for a week, and even the bottle says "for babies when soy protein is required"

There are plenty of things produced that are not good for us. And plenty of stuff we thought was fine that turned  out later not to be fine.

I totally agree with you. And will not give my baby soy formula for the same reason. After many, many trials my baby ended up on Gerber Gentle Plus and is very happy now. Also, in the US, the great majority of soy is genetically modified--another reason I would rather avoid it if at all possible.

  • See...that is my concern...the way things are processed in the US.  However, my husband thinks soy is better b/c he (DH) has asthma, which cow's milk can trigger and he thinks it may bother our son.

I just feel very hypocritical to give my child soy, if I don't drink it anymore.

  • My ped thiks soy blends best as a supplement to breastmilk.  I'm really going to ask about this tomorrow.
  • Well, my ped quelled some of my anxiety, but once we're done with this soy formula (which we will be tomorrow), we won't be getting more.  We'll get milk based from now on.
  • I used Enfamil with DS2 for a couple weeks after stopping BFing, he was a mess. Poops were watery, he was cranky and fussy. I switched him to Similac Sensitive and it helped him a LOT. It's a milk based formula but broke down much more than regular formula.
