Cheap/free activities for kids?

I just got a part time job (weekends only) so i am looking for some ideas of cheap/free things to do during the week (we already do storytime and the park and have a zoo pass).  We live in Macomb County;)  TIA!!

  • I'd like to know too! My DS is only 8.5 months so we can't do much yet, but i'd love to know for the future.  I'm jealous of your part-time job. I feel like i need to contribute!

  • Cider Mills are fun this time of year, as are the pumpkin patches when they open.  Also, many libraries have a nice kids play area with puzzles and crayons and such.

  • Joann Fabrics and Michaels sometimes have free classes/activities going on during the week for kids.  I've seen them mentioned in the ads that come in the weekend paper.  I think you can look online too.  Home Depot and Lowes have free workshops too that my DSD loooved when she was younger, but those are on Saturdays.  Another thing I started doing with DSD when I married her dad was to learn how to geocache.  It was a great bonding experience and we still do it together to this day, all over the area and even on vacations in other states.  You can check it out at geocaching.com.   Once you have the GPS unit (I bought a cheap used Garmin one on eBay) it's a free activity with limitless entertainment.  Also, the library has the free pass you can use for museums and art institutes and such.  I forget what the program is called, but I'm sure if you ask at your library they'll know what you're talking about.  I can't remember if Greenfield Village in Dearborn is part of the program, but that's another place DSD loved to go.  (There used to be admission coupons at valpak.com. Not a cheap activity for 3 kids if you have to pay for admission though)  I work full time (except right now while on bedrest) so I'm sure there are tons of other activities going on during the week that I don't have any clue about - these are just some general things I've done with my step-daughter over the years.

Thank You! We are in Saline, basically 10 mins from downtown Ann Arbor.

  • I'm kind of near there, and I have been researching things to do with my toddler this winter (I work 3 days/week, and she definitely needs to get out of the house daily!).

I've never tried any of these things, but some ideas I'm considering for this winter are My Urban Toddler, Gym America's preschool playtime (for walkers through age 4), and there's a tot open play on Tues/Thurs at the Meri Lou Rec center (unfortunately I work those days, but DH is home 1 day/week with her so he may bring her there). We also wnt to try taking her swimming in Ann Arbor (they have tot splash times).  These seem to be pretty cheap things to do. We are also a part of a playgroup, but because I work, we have a hard time finding playdates that work for us.
