car seat ?

Our infant car seat is only supposed to be used up to 22 lbs, DS is getting very close to that at 8 1/2 months. DH went to install the new ones and then realized they are good starting at 20 lbs, but that they aren't supposed to be used until LO is 1 yr old and there aren't any pics of it rear facing. It's a Graco Nautilus 3 in 1. I'm kicking myself because I swear we got ones that we could start using after the infant seat. Any ideas on what we should do? Or do I just need to break down and buy one for in between?

    go get a new seat. Your child can not legally face forward in the car until one year AND 20 lbs. And it is recommended to keep them rear facing much, much longer than that. The AAP now recommends at least 2 years, but best use is to allow your child to outgrow a convertible car seat before turning them forward facing. 

    My top picks for convertible seats are the sunshine kids radian, first years true fit and graco myride 65. The cosco scenera is a decent seat for a great price, but does not last as long as the other three listed because of shell height.

    The radian should easily last until your child can safely sit in a booster seat.

     

    My daughter is 26 months, and still rear facing. She will remain that way until she outgrows her seat.

    and the Nautilus is forward facing only.

    I totally agree that kids should stay rear facing as long as possible, but that isn't really accurate, is it?

    The convertible that we picked is good for up to 65 lbs ... . It's not realistic to expect a 5+ year old to be rear facing, right?

    it's entirely accurate. BEST USE is to allow your child to rear face until they outgrow your seat. And there isn't a seat on the US market that allows for rear facing until 65 lbs. The highest rear facing limit on the market right now is 45 lbs. Children in Europe ride RFing until 6 or 7 at least typically, and their car seat technology far exceeds that of the seats in the US. 

    Most children will outgrow their seat by height before weight anyways.

    Most parents will turn their children before they outgrown their seats, and while it IS legal, it is NOT as safe. All vehicle passengers are safer rear facing, it's basic physics. Best use of a convertible seat is to keep them rear facing until they are no longer within the height and weight limit of the seat they ride in.

    Hmm. I'm confused, then. We are planning to go with the Britax Boulevard, which is good for up to 65 lbs, and it says for rear and front facing.

    So I figured we'd turn him/her around when he/she got too tall to sit rear facing, probably age 3ish.

    A friend's 5yo is still sitting in his Boulevard (forward facing), so I was hoping getting this seat would give us the longest use.

    the boulevard is a decent seat. It forward faces to 65. It rear faces to 40.

    Okay. So what you meant is to keep them RF as long as the seat is approved for RF, not until they outgrow the seat.

    a seat is outgrown for rear facing use when they no longer fit the requirements for the seats rear facing limits. 

    They will not outgrow the seat completely before outgrowing it for rear facing use.
