At my last doctors appt my doctor suggested I get this test done. He was really pushing for me to to do it and said I would be selfish not to wtf?? I never had the test done with any of my other kids and I was just wondering how many of you have had this test done?

  • Where do you live? In CA its part of the standard testing they do, unless you sign the paper saying you dont want any testing done. If you live in CA it is just assumed you are going to get it unless you say "no" since insurance companies are required to cover it as part of the law here passed a few years ago. I had it done because its our first baby and honestly just had whatever tests they suggested to do done.

  • I live in bc and the it is not mandatory to get it done it's just that I feel obligated by my doctor to do it

  • We opted out because we are accepting of whatever God gives us. The doctor had the same view as we do. BUT if we wanted testing he would be more than happy to.

Gosh, I'd probably have something to "say" to him after that comment.

  • Jeez!!  Your doc seems like an a$$hole!  We did not have any of the testing done because I did not want to worry about the results coming back and the chance of a false positive.  Besides that we had both decided that it wouldn't matter what the tests said LO was still ours and perfect so tests were pointless.
  • A lot of Dr's like you to have it done, not so you will abort, but rather if there is an issue they know ahead of time and can have the proper medical care set up for the birth. In BC they like to know so they can send you to Children's Hospital to deliver if it's needed as a lot of the reginal hospitals either don't have NICU's or very limited ones.

I don't think there is anything shady about it. It's not like he gets paid anymore if she tests. They will simply have more information about this baby. It was wrong of him to make her feel pressured, but I really wouldn't say that it was "shady."

  • I agree with your dr. and it has nothing to do with my viewpoints on terminating for medical reasons.  It has more to do with preparing a family, especially one with other children, for whatever the outcome is.  Also, if you are over 35, this may be why he so strongly recommends it.

  • What a terrible thing for your doctor to say to you!?  I would switch doctors.  That is REALLY wierd.  As for the test; I didnt do it with DS, and I wont do it with this one either.  My doctor told me how high the false positives were and I decided it wasnt worth getting a test that will tell me something might be wrong, let me sweat the whole pg, and in the end everything is fine anyways.  I know two girls whose Triple Marker tests told them their baby had Spina Bifida, and neither of them did.  I could never terminate the pg based on a test with such inaccurate results, so why do it, you know?
  • my Dr. told me it is really only necessary for people who live in very small communities and there is a possibility that you may be related to your husband or childs father.
  • Our doctor gave us the choice of having it done, but he did recommend it...only because my husband had a sister that had one of the three.  We went ahead and were tested for it, but our only mind set was if we found out there was a possibility, we would have just been glad we were ready for it...as in, we would have had time to prepare and do some researching with how to best handle a child in that situation.

  • Just got back from my doctors appt and all the test came back negative phew!! He said their was a 1 in 20,000 chance so no need to worry... I feel like celebrating...mmm steak tonight!
