Abbott or Woodwinds

Hey Girls!  We just found out we will be expecting our first and I am looking into the different hospitals.  I currently do not have a primary doctor so I am pretty open.  I hear a lot of people talk about Abbott and Woodwinds.  Any experiences with them?  We currently live in New Brighton and Woodwinds looks amazing but is about 30 minutes away.  Is that too far?  And if you have any OB recomendations, that would be great.  Thanks!

Re: Abbott or Woodwinds

  • I know people who have delivered at (and liked both).  Woodwinds is one of the few places that does water births in the area.  The people I know who delivered at Abbott were all very high risk with micro-premies. While it's a good hospital, I don't know I'd want to drive that far (I'm from Shoreview) if I didn't have to.  I think St. John's, United, Regions, and St. Joe's are all probably closer.

I delivered at St. John's because it's where my clinic delivers.  I had good experiences for both my births there.

  • I delivered at Abbott and had a good experience. I had a scheduled c section because she was breech, so I was inpatient for 3 nights. Other than the room being kind of small, we had no complaints. The nursing was great, they have lactation consultants in house that round and see everyone and that was very helpful. We are headed back there in October for #2!

  • I delived both kids there (the first vaginally and the second via c-section) and had a great experience with both.  The nursing staff was great, the rooms are nice and they have alternative methods, such as massage, acupuncture and healing touch, they offer. The bath tubs are awesome for soaking.

DD was five weeks early so needed to be transfered to St. John's since Woodwinds didn't have a special care nursery.  It was a complete surprise she came early so the fact that she needed to be transferred was a downside.  I got transferred to St. John's also and had a good experience there as well.  Knowing all of that I chose Woodwinds for my second delivery.

With all that being said I wouldn't drive further than I have to if there are other good hospitals in my area.  I live in Woodbury so Woodwinds was convenient for me.  I would personally find an OB you liked first and then go from there with where they deliver.

  • My friend just delivered at Woodwinds last month and loved the experience. I went with another friend to visit and see the LO shortly after. We were only there for a short time and the nursing staff seemed amazing. They even had a lady come in to their recovery room and play the harp for a short while.

    It all seemed very peaceful!

  • I know this sounds weird, however my only problem with Abbott is you have to pay for parking. I do not beleive you have to do so at Woodwinds. Just something to consider when you are there for a few days or you have visitors.
  • I have no personal experience to speak from however, we live in New Brighton now and picked Woodwinds. My mom had surgery there last April and the staff was amazing (not to mention the food! LOL) and so far my appts have been fantastic with both the professionalism and the friendliness of the staff! :o)
