Part-time jobs?

I know there are some of you on here who work part-time. I'm thinking of going back to work PT, but really don't know where or what.

My biggest dilema is do I want to find a daytime job a few days a week (say three days, 6-8hr/day) OR something a few nights and weekends (retail, probably). If I work during the day, I know I could make more $ hourly, BUT I'd have to pay for childcare (which is so freakin' expensive, I don't know how some of you afford full time daycare, ugh!) and if I work nights/weekends, I'd probably not make much more than minimum wage but I wouldn't have to worry about paying a babysitter... DH would either be home, or my parents could watch E.

So, any fabulous ideas on how to make lots of $ working little hours ;) Seriously... I know I could get a PT job at say a medical office, making ok money, but the thought of sending E to daycare gives me major anxiety! And I don't want to work retail, and sacrifice dinner, bedtime and weekends w/ my family.

Maybe I should just play the lotto more often!

Re: Part-time jobs?

  • What about watching a kid part time in your home - maybe just 2 or 3 days a week? I think a lot of people pay $30+ a day...so three days could make you like $100 or something and it's tax free and there's no daycare costs.

    Bartending?

    Waitressing?

  • I say go for something more office oriented. It's fun to dress up for work when I go. Plus there's no stress of wacky hours or customers.

I went on 2 interviews after Justin was born. 1 was at Wegmans, which pays like ALL part-timers pretty much minimum wage- maybe like a few cents more. I wanted to work in the Bakery and figured early morning hours would be great.

Then I found my current job, making almost double what they offered me at Wegmans. Not to mention I get paid to do nothing. I work at a super-nice retirement community at the front desk. I usually just drink coffee and nest/facebook/fart around online. Originally I was hired for 10-12 hours a week but there are 8 PT receptionists and they all LOVE hours. I worked it out with my boss that I only work 1 shift a week. Some weeks if I don't feel like working I can always give the hours away- last month I worked 12 hours. It's just the perfect amount for me.

  • A desk job like MrsWhite's sounds ideal.  You'd have to weigh out the cost of day care...would you make enough to cover the cost, etc.  I'd lean more towards nights/weekends to avoid daycare.  If you want info on Tastefully Simple, email me.  The start-up costs are discounted for another week or so.  mrspate22@yahoo.com
  • You really can't beat the money per hour for waiting tables.. Even if it makes me want to slam my head into a wall most days.

  • Oh, and I wanted to add...I don't recommend watching another child anymore.  :)  I know MrsWhite said the same thingat one point.  Honestly, I'm still doing it because it's helping us pay off bills we need to pay off, but it's not my ideal way of making money.  It's hard when DS and the little girl just don't get along.
  • I work PT at a Lasik surgery place...was FT before having DD. I like what I do, but don't LOVE it and the people I work with are a PITA so I really would love to get out of there. The problem is that I have no idea what else to do-I get paid really well and the benefits are great...I just don't know who else would hire me 2-3 days/wk for what I"m getting now. And I don't want nights/weekends either so retail is out of the pic. It's tough!
  • If you are not working so much for the social enviroment but for random extra cash floor re-setters/merchandisers can make ok "fun" money with the right company; with a retail background you would have an advantage of getting in.  Like anything else be picky and if you can wait it out for the right opportunity.  Good luck!

  • How about being a bank teller?  Day time hours, and sometimes you work Saturdays, but just in the mornings - that's what I was doing.  I just took a full time position at the bank - I recently was offered a promotion that I couldn't pass up - but working PT was nice because I knew my hours months in advance, and they usually start at least $10/hour or so.

  • If I were to work a true part-time job, I would wait tables or ref soccer again.  Both I made really good money, for a short amount of working hours, and the schedule was very flexible.
