Benadryl for teething

Has anyone used childrens benadryl (rubbing directly on gums) to help with teething?

I prefer not to use teething tablets or orajel. I also don't want to be using tylenol all the time...

Re: Benadryl for teething

  • I guess I'm not sure what Benadryl would do for teething?  Isn't Benadryl an antihistamine?

  • Wait, you don't want to use orajel, teething tablets, or tylenol but you'll use benedryl?  Not sure what benedryl is going to do for teething, it's not a pain reliever.

  • serious question and no snark- why would you want to use benadryl but not teething tablets?

  • hmmm IMO Oragel seems safer and less medicated than benadryl... And I thought benadryl is for allergies? I use benadryl but only when DS is really itchy during an eczema breakout...
  • My nanny has been in several daycares and brought this idea up. She said some parents went this route. It's not ingested, but put on the gums. I don't really understand it either.

My reasoning to why I think if it works then I will use it is that I feel Benadryl is harmless- heck it's the only thing I could use during pregnancy to sleep a few nights a week (and OB was all about it).

I have no scientific reasoning, etc. so I figured I would post and see if anyone has ever heard of this practice.

  • All Benadryl is going to do is dope up your LO. It is formulated as an antihistamine not a pain reliever. Why would you prefer to give her Benadryl but not teething tablets?

  • I don't have the link but benadryl is not safe to just take, and shouldn't be used unless needed. IMO.   Granted not given as a topical but babies have died from ODing on Benadryl that has been given to them.  Clearly not safe.

No drug is "harmless," and should only be used as intended.  I really don't see the purpose of doing this, and am a little disturbed that you think that anything OK for you is OK for a baby.

And anything put on your kid's gums IS ingested.  Her gums are in her mouth, I hope.

  • I appreciate the "no snark" on teething tablets and orajel. I am not strongly opposed to anything right now, but I explained why I am not as freaked about Benadryl above.

I am really stressed b/c baby is seemingly in a lot of pain with teething, but conflicted because my Dr. got me all freaked out about Bella Donna in teething tablets....

Clearly, no one having ever heard of this is making me second guess (I just really respect all insight she's given me thus far)...

Of all challenges thus far, for some reason choosing how to help soothe teething pain has me the most stumped. I feel stupid for not having a firm decision on this topic, but am working at coming to terms with the solution that will work best for us.

During pregnancy- so yes my baby was in mind.

SO THE RECORD IS CLEAR- I AM NOT PUTTING BENADRYL ON MY BABIES GUMS.

Also, for the one who indicated that all is does is dope the baby up- my understanding is that doping the baby up is all the teething tablets do (Bella donna acts as a sedative?)

  • My doc said no teething tablets or orajel.  The only thing she approved was Tylenol.  We use that (generic) at night but not every night.  He does not usually need it during the day -- but if he does I just give him something cold to nom on instead.

  • Just another thing, We used the oragel in the Q-tips and made sure it wasnt the one with pain reliver or night time just plaain oragel and it worked fine, just a little rub and the Q-tips help with keeping the oragel from overdispensing. He didnt act different or anything, but it helped his pain relief for sure :)
  • Ok- I called the Dr. and their recommended practice is: Orajel, anbesol (sp?), or Motrin when really fussy. I don't necessarily agree, but it clearly looks like Dr's, parents, etc are all over the map with what is good.

I will be going with the orajel.

  • My pedi recommended a mixture of Benadryl and Mylanta for DS's gums.  He hasn't started teething yet, so we have not tried it.

The paper is at home, but I think it is a tbsp of each, refrigerate for an hour, rub on LO's gums, store remainder in the fridge.

The Benadryl is for swelling, the mylanta is for numbing (or I might have those reversed?) - he said it is better than teething tablets.

  • IMO- Benadryl won't help your baby's teething pain.. it will help your LO sleep... but won't relieve the pain....

How about a cold wash cloth on LO's gums to chew on?

Tried cold wash cloth, using cold pacifiers, have 5 different teethers (all researched as working), sophie, mesh bag.. Everything!
