Re: Abel

  • "A-Bell" is that how you say it?

I like,  Adele better... Or annabel

Don't like Abel too much (This is for a girl right?)

  • I'm undecided. I like the NN Abe, but I think I prefer Abram to Abel.

Something about the name seems uncomfortably backwoodsy to me. I picture an Abel having brothers named Cletus and Jedidiah.

That said, someone I know recently had a son they named Timothy Abel. I think Abel makes an awesome MN.

    Just my two cents.

Abel is a boy name, as in "Cain and Abel."

Abel is traditionally a boy's name, and I don't think I've ever heard of it used on a girl.

Abel was the "good" son of Adam and Eve in the Bible; he was murdered by his brother Cain.

Haha... no, it's pronounced like 'able' and it's for a boy.

  • I really like it.  It is a baby's name on my hubby's favorite show "Sons of Anarchy".  It is different, but cute!

Biblical is kind of our 'theme', but I'm finding it so hard to settle on a boy name!  They're either too popular, or too weird.  Sigh.

I agree with the bolded and since you are going for biblical I think it's a great choice!

This. I think you've found a Bible name that isn't to used. Much better than someone nameing their child Cain!

Embarrassed I see! I do like the name abel (as in cain & abel)...But I don't know why the spelling didn't jump out at me...

  • <3 the name Abel. Its my dad & brothers name so were going to use it as a middle name.

I love Amos, but DH brought up the excellent point that it sounds a lot like anus.  I'm not going to take that risk!  Haha.

  • I like it a lot. It's a name that is used in many languages and spelled the same way in many of them as well. I'm a big fan of cross-cultural names.

I agree about preferring Abram to Abel - and I do like the nn Abe a lot.  Abel's not bad though.

Boy, is that the understatement of the year... If you find the Bible to be true, it was one of the first baby names ever! I would say the first useable baby name, since Cain has such a stigma attached to it now...

Anyway.. I really like the way it sounds, just not sure if I'd picture the story every time I heard it. It's a very memorable story- not in a good way. Wink

Eventhough it's not the name of the first murderer in history, it has kind of the same feeling when you consider it's the first murder victim in history, KWIM? Sorry.

If that association doesn't bother you, though, I say use it!
