Am I the only one not taking prenatal vitamins?

I know I will probably get some bad marks for this... but I can't keep ANY vitamins down, even my daughter's Flinstone chewables. I eat fruit and salads like crazy and tons of other veggies. Am I the only one??

Re: Am I the only one not taking prenatal vitamins?

  • You know what does the trick for me - I take it before bed with a tall glass of chocolate milk.
  • Loading the player...
  • Take them right before you go to bed or give your OB a call. I was the same way with DD, but MW found one that works for me.
  • I have been extremely sick from week 6 so the doctor told me not to take them until I felt better...this week is the first week where I've actually noticed I feel okay.  So I'm going to start taking them this week again, I hope they don't make me sick though! GL!

  • I know how you feel.  It helps if you have a snack first and then take it right before you go to bed.

I've been doing this and it has worked for me.  In the morning I will gag & throw up.

  • I'm not right now, because they make me sick. I am taking Folgard and Folic Acid, though (6.2 mg total), so my doctor said not to worry about it right now.

If it continues a few more weeks, he's going to try some different rx brands. But for now he would just rather I eat and keep it down.

  • I take extra folic acid because there have been some studies that show that folic acid not only helps reduce the occurence of neural tube defects but also heart defects.  MY first child had a heart defect so that is why I take extra.  My doctor prescribed folate for me.  Each folate pill has 1000 mcg of folic acid and it is very small and tasteless.  Maybe you can ask you doctor about prescribing you folate.  After insurance I only pay $3 for 120 pills.  On days that I can't stomach my PNV I take  my folate with no problem.
  • My doctor told me to take them before bed if they make me sick, perhaps you could try that? Additionally you should always take it with food, it's easier on your stomach that way.

Have you tried the gummie prenatals? They have them at Target and I hear good things about them.

  • With my 1st pregnancy I was taking my vitamins in the morning... BIG mistake.  Then I started taking them right before bed with some food and it worked like a charm.   Good luck.

  • Don't worry about it.  Take them when you can.  Pre-natal vitamins are just insurance.

I had a huge problem taking my PNV as well.  The ones from Target helped.  My OB advised that one of the issues that could be causing an upset stomach is that PNV usually have a high amount of iron, however the Target gummies don't contain iron.  Try to make sure you get your iron from other sources, but I found these vitamins to be very helpful.

  • I know how you feel... I am 13 weeks, and feeling good. When I started feeling better, I started taking my prenatals again, and they made me sick. I took them with food at bedtime and they still make me sick. The other night I threw up a whole Target prenatal, and a whole DHA supplement. So gross! I have been taking 800mcgs of folic acid though, and I can keep that down. Have you tried that? I'm going to keep trying to take the prentals though because I do think they're important. Have you tried the gummy ones from Target? I did, but they don't have iron or calcium in them.

If you are able to chew these up real well and keep it down for a few minutes, you may be getting some of the nutrients in them.  The big horse pills take a real long time to digest but the chewables start being absorbed nearly right away.

I second the idea for gummi vitamins. When I was experiencing mild m/s gummi bears always went down smooth.

  • Right now I am only taking my regular one a day Women's, until I can get to the store to fill my prescription for prenatals.

  • Well, if you can't keep them down, you can't keep them down.  I would try to take them if your nausea starts to subside.  Always take them with a full stomach (if that's even possible).  Nothing worse than a vitamin on an empty stomach.  Have you tried the gummy vitamins?

If all else fails I would talk to your Dr. and see what they think.

  • I always take mine at night after dinner and I have never had an issue.

  • I take a regurlar Multi Vit and and extra Folic Acid - My Doc is totally fine with this.
  • I take the Target ones right before bed--that combination seems to work way better for me than other brand/times.  Good luck finding something that works.

    this, for sure.

For thousands of years, women gave birth to perfectly healthy babies without the benefit of prenatal vitamins. Do what you can and if you can't, try not to obsess over it. I promise it doesn't make you a bad mother if you can't stomach the PNV.

But for the record, I've got the target brand and take them before bed, which seems to help. They have a coating on them and they aren't gigantic, which helps. I can't even THINK about swallowing something first thing in the morning. GL!

  • I finally found some that don't make me gag.  (All multi vitamins make me sick, it is not a prenatal thing.)  Vitafusion gummy vitamins from Target.  I love them - and I actually want to take them.

  • Something else you might want to try is the Belly Bars.  They're like nutritional bars, and they have all of the vitamins/nutrients you need in them.  I got mine at Babies R Us.  They're not bad, a lot better than the disgusting horse pills they have for prenatal vitamins lol.

I've heard they make them in shakes too, but I haven't been able to find them.

  • I couldn't take them (and was only able to handle Vitamin B50 complex in the beginning every other day or so).  Obviously we'd love to do everything they'd like us to do as expectant mothers, but my doctor put me on an Rx for the M/S and that made it possible for me to take them now.

    {edit}

P.S. My doctor also told me not to take them until I could start eating again and not throwing up.

  • I sometimes get nauseous when I take them in the morning so I make try to eat a full meal first and I have heard people say that they take them at night with a snack and are usually fine through the night. Good luck!
