Jumping the gun a little...insurance

I don't have insurance that covers infertility treatment, only diagnosis. For those in the same boat, would you ever consider supplementary insurance prior to diagnosis, so any treatments would be covered if you needed them eventually?

Re: Jumping the gun a little...insurance

  • I believe for most of us, there was no supplementary insurance that covered infertility that was available.   I switched to DH's insurance completely before starting IVF, but it would not have covered anything as a secondary provider.

  • Oh, I see. That's a bummer. Its good that your husband's insurance will cover your IVF, I hear that is insanely expensive Sad

  • We're on Tricare (military insurance) and they don't cover IUI or IVF or most of the other "big" treatments.

I haven't considered getting a supplementary insurance. I figure if we get to that point we'll just have to suck it up and pay for it. We've already started putting money away for that possibility.

  • MH just started a new job that doesn't offer benefits and I am a temp, so benefits are pretty much non existent.

We had the choice of keeping the insurance from his previous job under COBRA for 18 months and pay about $1200/month for it or find a new individual plan.

We decided to go with the COBRA option, because this plan covers both maternity care and IF testing and treatment 100%. And I don't think we would find a less expensive plan with the same coverage again.

Not exactly an answer to your question, but I thought I'd share anyway Smile

I'm thinking it may not be a possibility, or maybe so expensive it might not be worth it. Saving now is a good idea. I doubt I'd be able to afford it at some point if I didn't save. And at least if you don't need it for IF you could use the money for something else :)

That sounds like a good option! I mean...besides the fact that $1200 a month is crazy expensive! I feel like every month that goes by I'm getting a more worried about the cost of potentially having a problem. Though technically I did get pregnant, so maybe I just "need to relax."Wink

Ha! That would definitely be the cheapest option, even though maybe not the most effective.

It was a tough decision for us to make, because it really is quite expensive, but it's good to know that we won't have any huge medical bills coming our way, no matter what happens.

Ya, I'm sure it was hard, that is a lot of money, are you thinking at this point you might need treatment in the future? Or have you? How many cycles has it been for you? I think we started on hear close to the same time.

We started in December 2009 as well and I just started cycle # 9. I started charting in July and I seem to be somewhat regular, always have cycles around 35 days (ranged from 29 to 39 days, but the last few were around 35), and judging by CM, CP and my temps I ovulate just fine. Our timing has been good, so I am not sure what will be in our future.

I think we will start testing in January, if I am not KU by then, and I assume we would start with b/w for me and SA for MH. But I would have to talk to my OBGYN about this to be sure.

  • Ok, so ya, we are pretty close. I'm a little frustrated because I feel like since I did get pregnant once that it was a fluke or something. I think I'm just getting impatient. Probably with that year mark coming up. I'm sure your feeling the same thing. TTC months go by so slowly.
