post pregnancy running

what happened to my knees?  before i got pregnant, i had zero knee problems.  i couldn't run during pregnancy because of complications.  now i'm back at it (just a couple miles a few days a week) and my knees hurt SO bad.  i could run more than a couple of miles if it weren't for the knees. will this get better?  any stretches or exercises i should think about doing?

Re: post pregnancy running

  • I know your ligaments are loose after pregnancy, I started running about 6 weeks ago and I have not had any knee pain yet. Maybe try some new shoes? I also stretch for 5-10 minutes after every run.  Try googling knee stretches and see what comes up. I am sure stretching will help strengthen your knees. HTH.

  • How old is your LO?  What part of your knee is hurting?  How old are your shoes?

Try using some heat (that really helps with the tendinitis in my knees acts up), but I've also had problems with my iliotibial band (it felt like I was being stabbed in the side of my knee) that I needed physical therapy for.  Personally, I'd scale back your training and rest.  Start again slowly in a couple of weeks.  If you're still hurting, see your doctor.

There's also some good features on Runner's World that may be helpful (https://www.runnersworld.com/cda/toolsarticle/1,,s6-241-290-291-0-0-0-0-347,00.html)
