Babies: 6 - 9 Months

Too old to swaddle?

Our daughter is going to be 6 months old next week and we are still swaddling her in the Miracle Blanket.  Is she too old to be swaddled??  I am asking because we are having a terrible time with getting her to sleep through the night.  She wakes up several times in the night and we just cant fiure it out.  We eventually end up feeding her.  We also have her in a sleep positioner still because we were afraid of her flipping onto her tummy in the night.  What do you all do???/

Re: Too old to swaddle?

  • First of all, my pedi told me that once they are able to flip over onto their tummy on their own, you don't need to worry about keeping her on her back with a sleep positioner. Lay her down on her back, but if she flips over, it's fine.

As for swaddling, my understanding is that once they're mobile AT ALL, you're supposed to stop using the Miracle Blanket. You can still swaddle with a normal receiving blanket. I'm not sure about the distinction since I've never had a miracle blanket, but that's what my pedi recommends, and I've also seen the same advice given on these boards.

  • We stopped swaddling around 6 mos b/c DD kept trying to get out of it, thus defeating the purpose. We also stopped using the sleep positioner then too, b/c she would always scoot down to where her head was at the very end of it. DD is 8 months and still wakes up once to eat during the night. I think it's pretty common for babies to not STTN yet.

You could try losing the swaddler and sleep positioner and see if that helps her be more comfortable. It took DD a week or so to really get used to it, but then she started sleeping better. We weaned her off swaddling by doing one arm free for a couple of nights first. GL!

  • I tried desperately to wean DS out of the swaddle around 4 months and it was a nightmare. My pedi told me to keep swaddling him until he indicated that he was ready to get out of it. Sure enough, about a month later he made it very clear that he was done. One night we switched to a sleep sack and he was perfectly happy!!

It sounds like your LO might be ready since she is waking up all the time. Maybe try a sleep sack and just see how it goes. If you guys are waking up a bunch anyway, what can it hurt?

  • We had to stop swaddling at 4 months because one night after LO started rolling he somehow managed to roll while swaddled onto his tummy and didn't have use of his arms to push himself up.  Luckily, when I went in inthe morning and saw it, he had turned his head and was fine, but I about had a heart attack!  After that, no more swaddle!  The first two night without it, he woke up several times, but after that he was back to his normal sleepy self.  He still does always roll to sleep on his stomach though, which the pedi said is fine once they can do it themself.  Good luck!
  • It's not so much age, but what she's doing.  It recommended to stop when LO can roll over or break loose.  And it is okay for her to sleep on her tummy, but only if she rolls there herself, unswaddled.  I suggest de-swaddling, and moving to a sleepsack, like the Halo ones, instead.
