Constipation! Help me!!

Ok so I'm about at my wits end with this problem. I need a remedy to not fix the problem, but to prevent it! I'm currently drinking about a cup and a half of prune juice right now (yuck, making me gag) not to mention I took a stool softener hours ago! Needless to say the rest of my night should be eventful, but I'm welcoming it with open arms, because I am desperate!!

I am only 11 weeks, and I look like I'm 5 months pregnant because I am SO FULL and my tummy is so hard!! Very uncomfortable :( I'm a ball full of complaints, and not pleasant to be around because I'm not feeling pleasant myself. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated! PLEASE & THANK YOU! :))

  • P.S. I'm going on 2+ days without a BM! Longest was 4 and I don't want to get to that point...sorry if this is TMI!

  • I take a stool softener at night and a dose of miralax every morning. It's done wonders.

  • Do you have a Trader Joe's near you?  They make these little fiber cakes (12 grams of fiber per cake) that have worked wonders for me in the past.  I have not had constipation issues thus far but when I do these will be first on my list of items to try.  Good luck and hope something works for you very soon.

  • I drink 2 large cups of apple juice a day. It helps me. I was really constipated and I was sick of drinking prune juice. I don't know if it will work for you, but the apple juice has been the best thing for me!
  • You could try taking colace. It takes a day or so to kick in, but it does help prevent constipation.

  • Try eating a salad, or beans, something with a lot of fiber.  You can also buy metamucil (powder) you mix it in with water or juice and it should help.  They also make metamucil cookies, I've heard they are great!

  • I have this problem as well and it is complicated by IBS.  I went 7 days without a BM last week and was in immense pain.  I asked the doctor for a new prenatal on Friday that I am going to get today.  Call your doctor and ask for a prenatal with a stool softener in it, that might help.  Also you can take Miralax if needed.

  • i was having the same problem....my doctor told me to take colace a stool softener every day if i have to and i do....it has helped me.  she also changed my prenatal vitamins to one with more fiber called Prenate Elite....i think this helped also :) hope you find relief
  • I also recommend a stool softener.  I bought the generic one from Walgreens.  I was about to buy some fiber supplements and the pharmacist came out and stopped me.  Said that if I was already constipated, I didn't want more fiber to 'harden it up'.  I take the stool softener everyday or every other now and have not had issues.  GL!
  • I have a very BAD problem last week and swore I wouldn't let that happen again.  I've been having 2 prunes at night, 2 in the morning, drinking 1 cup of coffee in the AM, eating more fruit, and drinking tons of water.  So far (5 days and counting) I have gone every day ... so it seems to be working.  Good luck - hope you find something that works for you.

  • Colace - stool softener

eat pears (supposedly the constipation super fruit)

eat more fiber  - "The American Dietetic association recommends 25 - 35 grams a day. If your intake is 15 grams or less and you want to increase your fiber intake, increase it gradually. If you jump from 15 to 35 grams a day, it may cause stomach cramping and gas. Make sure you also increase your water intake when you start increasing your fiber intake. This will also reduce any cramps you get. "

    good luck

  • Miralax and colace, on my doc's orders. It's the only thing that worked.

I went over a week without a BM and then spotted red when it finally happened. It scared the shiit out of me, so I am trying to be really good with these suppliments and lots of fruit, when I can keep it down.

Also, staying hydrated has helped. Pedialyte freezer pops and ice cold ginger ale.

  • Thanks for all the recommendations ladies! Hoping one of them works to prevent this from happening again....

Oh and I cant imagine going 7 days without and BM! My tummy would burst! Poor things who went through that, kudos!

  • I am a huge fan of Activia yogurt!  I never had normal BMs until I started having it everyday!  Yummy too :)
