potty training at 18 months?!?

hey girls!
Okay, so i got one of those baby center e-mails today and actually decided to read it...it says to start putting a potty out so the child can get used to the idea.
woah...totally didn't know i was supposed to start thinking about this at a year and a half.
if you have a boy, when did you start potty training...and when did you son "get it"?
clearly i need to start hanging out with some of my "mom friends" (aka some of you guys. lol), cause i am clueless ; )

Re: potty training at 18 months?!?

  • I am around ALOT of kids and I only know of 2 that were potty trained that young (both are brothers). THe girls I know, usually potty train around 2 and boy a little later. Sebastian potty trained verye easily at 2 years 3 months and Nate potty trained at 2 years 6 months.

  • I think it can't hurt to introduce the potty around 18 months. But I wouldn't try any sort of real potty training under after he turns 2. Zoe was trained super eary by her own doing at 2 years and 2 weeks, but most kids, especially boys are trained closer to 2 1/2.
  • Even though girls are supposed to get it earlier, H was a very late trainer, and didn't fully get it until she was 3+.
  • E just turned 2 and I've had potty training in the back of my mind but haven't really pursued it since we have a newborn and I know the older brother can regress. We bought a little toilet potty training lid and occasionally E will say "popo" so we take him to the bathroom and sit him there. Nothings happened but we've been kind of relaxed about the whole situation thus far. I don't think it's the right time for him as he has been acting out quite a bit with little brother at home. But I will just follow his lead and take the potty training more seriously once I see he is ready.

  • we bought dd a potty chair at 18 months also and left it in the bathroom so she can get used to the idea. the idea was not to immediately start potty training her but to get her used to the idea and we made it a part of our bath time routine. she did pp and poop in it 2 days later on her own. that doesnt mean we took the diapers away completely but it was an eye opener that she knew what it was for so fast. dd didnt start with full blown potty training until she was 2y/2m and she fully got it within days.

  • It's funny you bring this up because my husband texted me this morning that our son who is 19 months went up to him and said "caca" after he had done it in his diaper. So that to me is a sign that he is ready- but I have no clue where to start potty training. I'm picturing his pp going all over the bathroom except the toilet! So now our adventures to potty training have started. Like some ladies said- I'm not going to force him but little by little introduce him to the potty. Step by step.
  • we never did the small potty thing. When he was 2 before a shower or something I would show him Josh peeing and then hold him up to see if he was interested. He started to go pretty quickly. I was still not ready to train him yet though  I found it a little overwhelming and thought it would be so much harder then just changing a diaper. I was so wrong. It took Aaron about a week-2 weeks to fully get it down and that was at 2.5 yrs old. I used the potty training in a day which worked well. He did not have peeing accidents at all but he was not giving up his number 2 very easily. He would wait until he was napping or if I turned my back for an instant and go #2. So I bribed him with donuts and m&ms and it worked :) Good luck!
  • I started potty training Nicholas 7 months ago and he is still not fully trained. Indifferent

He'll pee when I take him into the bathroom and stand him in front of the toilet, but if he has to go inbetween my taking him in there, he just pees in his pants. He doesn't even attempt to tell me that he has to go.

  • I've had a potty in our bathroom for atleast 3mos. now and he's only gone in it once. In the big toilet he's gone twice, but never poop. I've tried but since he doesn't speak yet (only says Mama) then I'm not pushing him to potty train.
