I don't know about "signs", but we have been potty-training with DS since he was a year.
What has worked for us, so far, is we put DS on a schedule (as much as humanly possible).
For example. When we started, we would put him on his potty-seat before his bath. He is now peeing consistently before his bath.
Then we added morning. He pees in the toilet in the morning.
Then we added after eating (which is when he usually poops). After nap etc etc.
The only thing I really want to impress upon you is the fact that IMHO you have to be consistent. If you put DC on the potty before the bath one night, you should do it every night. We even travel with a potty seat now.
Oh, and we never, ever force DS to stay on the potty seat. My friends who have effectively potty-trained early said that this is completely counterproductive.
It is going to be more difficult than waiting until they can talk and you can explain things verbally, but it is very possible and very rewarding to do it at this age. (before they turn 2 and "no" becomes their favorite world lol)
Keep telling yourself that 40 years ago, most children were potty-trained at 18 months. Some days are harder than others.
We just introduced the potty chair. We put it into his room and let him play with it and make a big deal over him sitting on it. I didn't want it to be a strange thing when we were readyto seriously potty train. He loves playing with it and we have gotten him to go potty on it once. GL!
DD tells me that she wants to go potty. She usually just likes to sit there for a second and pull off toilet paper. It seems like she has to go potty right after she goes in her diaper and wants it off. She has gone a handful of times peepee on the potty. I know she is almost ready because she sat on the potty the other day and got off to play and peed a little on the floor and ran back to the potty and sat down.
We bought a potty and we ask him to sit on it occasionally. I just want him to get the idea of what it is and why we use it. He sees us going potty and wants to sit on it when we do.
I tried to make him aware of peeing/pooping. I could tell when he was going, so I would ask him if he was going potty. At first I was getting blank stares, but now he knows when he's going pee or poop and he'll say yes when I ask. He's also much more aware of his diaper. Tonight he actually got a clean diaper and brought it to me because he wanted to be changed (that's supposed to be a sign they're getting ready to be potty trained).
GL! I really have no idea what I'm doing so far.... lol.
