shredded cheese ?

The shredded cheese I buy says to use within 7 days of opening the package. I though cheese lasted a long time as long as it's refrigerated. Does it really go bad that fast or is the cheese company just trying to get me to buy more cheese?

  • Yeah I never knew either.  I generally use it until it starts looking a little funky.

  • If it looks ok and smells OK I think it's probably fine.  Ours keeps for a long time.
  • I just learned (today) that on the bags of pre-shredded cheese they put plastic on the cheese to keep it from sticking together. I'm not buying those bags anymore. lol.

But, I used to always use them longer than 7 days and they were fine.

I usually get the grocery store brand. I'll have to check the name brand bags next time I go to the store. I just noticed it tonight, and I certainly feed L out of the same bag for more than 7 days. I don't eat cheese and DH rarely eats shredded cheese, so I buy it mainly for her consumption.

This is what I do too (with most foods Embarrassed  If it doesn't smell weird or look fuzzy, I consider it still good.

  • I never paid attention before, but I have actually noticed lately on a lot of cheese (not just shredded) that it says use within 5-7 days of opening.  We have some organic sliced cheese in the fridge and it says use within 3-5 days of opening.  I had always used cheese longer, but have tried to use it quicker with DD now.

Oh nooooooo!  How can they do that???  Link?

I never have to worry about a 7 day rule cause we use it so fast.
