If you had false labor and/or inconsistent contractions

How did you know when it was time?  This is my second, but with my first my water just broke so I knew it was time to go to l&d.

I had false labor Wednesday-Thursday last week.  Frequency of contractions were all over the place and they never got painfully strong, just really uncomfortable.  On call Dr said to wait for the 5-1-1 and for them to get stronger.  Well nothing more happened and they ended up dying off after 12 hours.

They started back up this morning around 4am and now, they are still pretty in consistent but have gotten stronger.  Needing to walk around or at least stand during one and needing to breathe through them more.

How do I know when its the real deal?  I know these are contractions, but how to tell between false and real labor.  Is there a chance they never are consistent and I just need to wait till I'm in a TON of pain to go to the hospital?  I do want to have time for an epi!  Oh and side note, I lost my mp and had bloody show, with a little bleeding every day since the bloody show.

Re: If you had false labor and/or inconsistent contractions

  • I had 3 false alarms before actually going into labor, but my ctx were never that painful.  I had leaking fluid for a day before I actually went into the hospital.

I would say if you are that uncomfortable and have already had bloody show and lost your MP, that you should go in and at least get checked.  There is no harm in doing that, aside from possibly "wasting" 3-4 hours of your time, but hey, you never know!  I say call your doc and go in for a check.

  • I was in painful false labor for 2 weeks! My contractions were consistant but not strong enough to do anything and my hospital only moniters for one hour and if you make no progress they send you home... i was in so many times they knew my name there! lol I was stuck at 5 cm for 2 weeks and ended up BEGGING for an induction at 39weeks because i couldnt take the pain anymore.  My advice is do what the dr says time them and if they are 5-1-1 then go in. it may be the real thing, it may not be but youre doing everything the dr told you to do... but chances are if youre dealing with false labor its gonna be soon =]
  • I had pretty regular ctx for the last MONTH of my pregnancy. They were between 3-6 min apart for most of that time. I basically just had to wait until I was in a TON of pain to go in. I still progressed very very slowly even when it was 'the real thing'. It took about 2 days once I was actually in labor. He was born 9 hours after they broke my water when I made it to 5cm. I knew it was the real thing when they got way more painful than they had been.
  • Have you seen your OB since?  With my second I had a forebag of water that broke, but my contractions were never that painful or consistent when I was dilating, and they still ended up breaking my actual water during labor.  Definitely get checked, just to be sure!

  • I had contractions 4 weeks before I went into labor at 42 weeks.  I had a false alarm (called the midwife, had to have someone pick me up, etc) 2 days before the real deal.  The day it happened I was in labor 2 hours (1 min contractions, 2 min apart) at home by myself wondering if this was it.  Then all of a sudden the intensity changed and I KNEW.

Mine never did get consistent.  I just went to the hospital when I couldn't take it anymore and was practically screaming.  (FWIW, I delivered vaginally with an epi and no problems at all, and the contrax NEVER got consistent, even during the pushing and actual birth.)

  • I also had contractions off and on for weeks. I didn't know it was the real thing until my water did break at home. They always seemed pretty painful, so I didn't think anything of it. Go in or call if you think it could be the real deal. I didn't have time to get the epi because everything went so fast, and she was my first. Doesn't hurt to be on the safe side,
