Babies: 6 - 9 Months

Need help with night waking/feedings

My LO is almost 6 months and is still waking up starving at least twice a night, sometimes three. She usually goes to bed between 6:30-7pm and is up for the day around 7am. I try to wait a few minutes before going in, but she will just scream her head off until I go in and feed her, then she immediately calms down and falls asleep shortly after going back into her crib with minimal fuss.

Will she grow out of this? Will it improve when we start solids? I am only ebfing. We did modified Ferber to get her to go down at bedtime and that has been successful, but it doesn't seem to work with wakeups. And I think she is hungry since she will usually sleep 5-6 hours the first stretch and then 3-4 for the rest of the night.

Any tips?

  • This is the same situation I am in, only my baby is 8 months old!  I thought it would improve with solids, but no dice.

I am eager to see what others have to say.

  • My girls were doing this for a while for about six weeks around 5 months old.  At their six month check up my DH brought it up to the pedi.  He explained that at this age, they should be able to make it all night and at this point it's become a habit for them.  They know that if they cry you will come in and feed them.  He said for us to turn off the monitors and let them cry for a couple of nights.  I couldn't do that, but I did only go in and give them a paci and leave the room.  It took a few nights, but now they make it from 7 pm to 6 or 630 am, then usually go back to sleep until 7:30 or 8.  Everyone is much happier now, and their naps are better.  GL!  It's hard, but so worth it for everyone
  • I have a big baby. At her 2 month well visit, the pedi told me that based on her size, she shouldn't need night feedings anymore and to stop feeding her when she wakes up for them. At that point, she was only waking up once a night. After the 3rd night she stopped waking up for them. She was waking up purely out of habit...the need was no longer there.

So, for the next few nights when she woke, I would just hold her for a little, change her diaper, and put her back down. She fell back asleep everytime.

At 2 months old when I did it, I wouldn't let her cry it out, but at 6 and 8 months I would. You'll have a rough few nights, but they will stop waking for the feedings eventually. Also, maybe give them more during the day to make up for the lost feedings at night? I always make DD's last bottle of the day 2oz bigger than usual. Sometimes she takes it, sometimes she doesn't.

  • DD wakes up once or twice every night to eat. She does seem legitimately hungry and according to Dr. Sears that can be quite normal because as they get more interactive during the day they can eat less. DD is also growing like crazy (2 inches in the last month) so when she wakes hungry I feed her. In time I'm sure this will go away....

Read Ferber's chapter on night feedings. Moving them, eliminating them, etc. It makes a lot of sense. She is hungry at night because she is fed every night... it is meal time. You have to train her out of it.
