Babies: 0 - 3 Months

size of baby @ birth/clothing size?

Happy Friday, Ladies!  I am visiting from the 3rd trimester/November board.  I was just wondering how big your baby was at birth and what clothing size they were first in.  (especially wondering about those bigger babies) Thanks! :)

Re: size of baby @ birth/clothing size?

  • I was estimated to have a very big 10 lb baby. I delivered a 7.9 baby. I did pack newborn and 0-3 month clothes to be prepared. He fit into the newborn clothes.

  • My LO was 8lbs 5oz at birth and 20.5 inches long. We barely had any newborn clothing because I thought he wouldn't be in it long at all. He's two weeks old and still in newborn (at 21.5 inches long now and 9lbs). I know other babies weigh less and are in 0-3 months so it really depends on your LO. I think it's because mine is really long and skinny. Definitely know that even if you have a "larger" baby, they could wear newborn for awhile.

  • DD was 8 lbs 8 oz, and fit in to NB clothes for about two weeks and then 0-3 month clothing after that. 0-3 month clothes initially were HUGE on her.

  • My LO was 9LB even, and wore NB for maybe 1 week. (He skipped right from 0-3 to 3-6 in 3 weeks!) I packed a NB and a 0-3, and the NB fit when we left the hospital.

  • 8lbs, 2oz, 19.6in at birth, 11lbs, 2oz, 21.10in at 1 month. He's still mainly in NB, although they are starting to become too short on him. Just an fyi clothing sizes vary with each brand. Gerber onesies are sized extremely small, DS was out of their 0-3 when he was 2 weeks old, yet Carters 0-3 are still on big on him.

  • We didn't get any NB clothes. The Gerber 0-3 stuff is kind of small, but all the other 0-3 stuff is kind of big. However, it's not big enough to warrant getting NB clothes at this point. She was 8lbs at birth.
  • LO was 6lbs 13oz, her coming home outfit was preemie size, but she fit into her newborn stuff almost right away. She is just now, at 6 weeks, outgrowing newborn and fitting perfectly into 0-3.
  • DS was 8lbs at birth, 21.5 inches, and NB clothes fit him quite well. When he was about 6 weeks he couldn't fit the newborn anymore. He's now 8 weeks, 12.5 lbs, 24 inches. 0-3 still fits, but 3 month fits better.

  • Our daughter was 8lbs at birth, and has been able to wear NB up until this week - and she still fits into a couple of the larger NB things (Target's Circo brand in particular). I was sure I was going to have way too many newborn outfits but I'm glad I had as many as I did.
  • DS was 7 pounds, 15 ounces and NB was too big but premie wasn't long enough. He is still in NB and he'll be a month old on Sunday.

  • My LO was 8lbs 1oz 20.5 inches. She only had 2 newborn size pajamas. The rest of her clothes is 0-3 months, 3-6 months & 6-9 months.

She's been wearing 0-3 months clothes.

  • My LO was 7 lbs 1 oz at birth and wore NB clothes for 2 months.

My nephew was 8 lbs 4 oz at birth and never wore NB clothes or diapers.

We didn't buy any NB clothes but people bought us some as gifts.  Plus Kissy Kissy and Gerber run small, so she fit into them earlier than 2 months.

  • She was born at 8 lbs 5 oz and fit into newborn.

She was last weighed in at 9 lbs 5 oz but that was almost 2 weeks ago and I know that she is well over that. She is now starting to fit into some 0-3 months but depending on the brand, she can still wear nb.

  • My DS dropped from 8lb. 4oz to 7lb and wouldn't fit in anything I brought to the hospital! So my family had to rush out and buy some Gerber newborn sizes because they are so much tinier than the newborn sizes, He stayed in those for 2-3 weeks and than finally fit into the newborn and 0-3. PLAN AHEAD FOR ALL POSSIBLE SIZED BABIES, is my advice haha so you dont end up with a baby who only fits a diaper :P

  • I was told "about a 7 lbs baby", DS was 9 lbs 1 oz and 21 1/4 inches long.  He wore 0-3 clothes until around 9 weeks when he started wearing some 3-6.  It depends on the brand though.  We never bought any newborn clothes.

ETA.  Avoid Gerber at all costs.  Their sizes are wacked!  DS was wearing 6-9 onesies at 6 weeks!

  • I delivered 13 days late and was told he would be 8 pounds.  He was 6 pounds 9 ounces, 21 inches long and newborns were huge on him as he was so long and skinny.

He wore newborn clothes until 6 weeks exclusively and even now can wear some at 8 weeks.   some are too short.   he can actually fit 3 months for lenght... he only weighs about 10 pounds 9 ounces at 8 weeks though.

  • DD was 9 lbs 11 oz and 20.5 inches long. She never wore any of her newborn clothes -- she fit into the footed sleepers and that was about it.

Length-wise newbprn was mostly fine, but she's such a solid baby that they just didn't fit at all. She never wore newborn sized diapers and went straight to 0-3s. She's gone to 3-6 clothes (mostly for the length now) in the last 2-3 weeks. I can still fit her in her 0-3 shirts. My sig pic has her in a 0-3 shirt.

ETA: She was in a 0-3 when we brought her home.

  • 7 lbs, 6 oz baby and she wore Newborn sized clothes, including Gerber (which can run on the small side).
  • DS was 7 lb. 6 oz. and even NB was big at first.  He wears 0-3 now, but mainly for length...it looks like you could fit two of him width-wise into most outfits.
