XP- Green Poop STILL- 1.5 weeks later

(XP'd from BF'ing board)

I went to an LC and saw DS's pediatrician Monday after I noticed several days of green poop and after DS started to choke and refuse the breast.  I was told by both that it was a high supply or overactive letdown.  I was told to block feed (feed from the same breast for several feedings in a row), which I did.  I was also told to recline when feeding and express milk after letdown, both of which I tried (I letdown immediately and sometimes LO wouldn't unlatch immediately).

Here's the issue--it's been 4 days since I started these recommended feeding techniques and 1.5 weeks since I saw my first green poopy diaper, and it's still green.  He has several bowel movements a day and the stool is literally the same consistency that it was when it was yellow (seedy, grainy).  Every once in a while he gets a runny diaper, but that's only like once a day max.

Should I be concerned that it's STILL green?  He seems fine.  He had his first gassy/fussy night last night, but otherwise he's been fine.  The pediatrician says the milk is just passing through his system fast, nothing to be worried about.  The LC also didn't seem worried.  But for some reason, I just get the feeling this can't be right. I mean, how long is it ok to have green, seedy poop?

Re: XP- Green Poop STILL- 1.5 weeks later

  • Mine was doing this for a few days and would be super fussy nursing.  He would only feed for about 5 minutes and not want to eat from the breast anymore, so he was only getting the foremilk and not much of the hindmilk, and I also had a forceful letdown. Then he would be hungry again soon.  I decided to pump and give bottles and he's been a lot better.  Back to yellow, seedy poops and calmer.  I still nurse at night and nurse sometimes throughout the day, but definitely more bottles.

FYI, I also tried to block feed and it still didn't work.

  • I was having the same issue and still occasionally have greenish looking poops but they're now the right consistency.  I've been block feeding for almost a month and his poops are no longer the frothy, pine green poops he was having a month ago.  From everything I've read it's normal for breastfeed baby poop to range in color from yellow to green.  I never thought I would spend so much researching poop before I had a baby...
  • DS had green poop for 6 weeks!  We went back every week to see the LC and did the block feeding, the hand expressing, the reclined nursing positions and it took 6 weeks to get my oversupply under control.  It's still green every now and again, but he's healthy and happy.  Don't worry, it takes time!  Keep up the good work.
  • I have the same issue with strong letdown and oversupply. The pediatrician is only concerned if he has frothy green poop without the seedy look. I found that pumping 15 minutes before he usually eats (every 2 hours) helps get rid of that foremilk that makes him gassy and kept him from latching consistantly. He would choke and pull back, meanwhile my milk is spraying everywhere.

After 3 days of trying to do this and making sure I do not feed him while engorged, his poop has returned to orangy-yellow with a green poop eveyr now and then. I can tell a difference in the milk I pump; my engorged breast milk is watery, but if I pump after feeding him (even up to 2 hours after) I get the thick fatty milk. If your doctor and LC are not concerned, I wouldn't worry. Unless LO gets gassy and cranky from it.
