Kids on Motorcycles now with PIP

So I posted last night about kids riding on motorcycles.  I said I saw a little girl riding on the back of a motorcycle, she looked maybe 5.  You have to look closely, but she is wearing the white helmet.  I finally got the picture off my phone to show you all!

Sorry our windshield is super dirty from hitting 1000 bugs.

  • That is crazy! There was a mom at DD's preschool last year that would bring her DS on a scooter. Drove me nuts. He would stand on the scooter in front of where she sat. So dangerous.
  • What?! OMG.

An adult in a motorcycle crash barely stands a chance.

  • I am sure I will get flamed for this.

I really don't see the huge deal with putting a child on a bike in a safe manner. It is hard to tell how old the child in the picture is so I can't speak to the safety of that particular situation. As soon as LO is big enough to place his feet on the foot pegs, has a proper fitting full face helmet, proper riding gear with a responsible motorcycle operator, he will be on the back of a motorcycle. I think I was about 7 or 8 before I was big enough to be a passenger so I am guessing he will be around that age.

There is risk in everything. You can still live life while doing so in the safest way possible. I have no intention of keeping my child in bubble wrap. Life is way too fun.

All that said, I think it is worse to see a person operating a motor vehicle while talking on their cell phone or texting while there are children in the car or in another car near the impaired driver than to see a responsible person operating a motorcycle with a child on the back.

Sure, you can operate a motorcycle in a safe manner, but that's all you can do. You can't control other drivers, especially the distracted ones out there on their cells/texting.

  • Yikes, I witnessed a motorcycle accident with a small child on the back.  It was very frightening.  The bike just tipped during a slow turn.  The man had a huge helmet on his daughter.

So true.  My Dad was killed in a motorcycle accident in July.  The driver that hit him "didn't see him".

  • I'm so sorry for pp's loss :(. That is heartbreaking.

I don't really have a strong opinion since I sort of leave that up to parental judgment (although I'm not a fan of them & have no intention of ever getting on one or letting my kids get on one but I know bikers are pretty passionate about biking) but it does strike me as odd that there are so many laws & regulations about how that child has to be restrained in a car yet they can ride on a motorcycle.

I am very sorry for your loss. My husband was just hit by a deer while on his bike (deer shot out of the woods and into my husband) it was a horrible feeling and he was very lucky, only spent a week in the hospital. I can not imagine how hard it would be to loose someone in any accident.
