So we have scheduled three orientations over the next month at three different types of agencies and facilitators. Tonight is our first orientation. So very excited. Also, we are meeting with a couple this weekend that are adoptive parents. I used to work with the mother. This way we also get a very personal account and her husband really wants to talk to mine about the "guy" side of the process. I know that she had 2 failed matches/ reclaims before they got their beautiful son last year.
Pinch me! This is really happening. And so the journey begins.....
Re: So excited... 3 scheduled Orientations!
I was incredibly surprised at last night's orientation. THe program is a lot smaller and much more intimate that I expected (which I really like). Plus it is locally based. We have a "phone conference" call scheduled for another, much larger national agency which is so unappealing to both of us. We really like the process of getting to know the people at the agency/not-for-profit organizations instead of just being another number at a larger, more corporate "business".
You ladies are so wise. We went with an open mind, came out thoroughly pleased. We are beginning to quickly realized what will and will not work for us.
That's great Joes!! After going to our orientation, we found out rather quickly -just as you did- what would work for us and what wouldn't. It's progress and feels like the ball is in motion. GL!!
I'm so happy you had a good experience last night.
Something you may want to consider, if you haven't already and the length of process is important to you: often, smaller agencies place fewer children a year than larger agencies. Of course, they generally work with fewer families. So what you really want to compare is the average wait time for families, both from application to match/placement and from the completion of homestudy to match/placement. Any agency you talk to should be able to give you these numbers.
Good luck!
Thanks Captain! That is something to consider as well. We just believe that our child will come to us in the time we and he/she is ready to be a part of our family, regardless of the agancy used. The other difference with the larger agancy is that it was nearly $8K more than the 2 locals... We feel that the larger agency has more overhead and passes it on the the adoptive family.
Who knows... we may feel differently after we meet with all the agencies.
