give me strength! letting them cry it out

So after the was three months old he was sleeping thru the night, which was awesome.  Then after 9months old, he started getting recurrent ear infections and would wake up crying in the night and the only way to calm him and fall back to sleep was to bring him to bed with us.  got tubes a couple weeks ago and is still doing the waking and crying, which is probably now habit for him.  Last  night we decided to let him cry, which lasted about 30 minutes.  woke up once or twice, whined and fell asleep again.  It was hard but my husband had a harder time than me!  Any advice or words of encouragment would be wonderful.  gonna try to stick with it

  • Stay strong!  I can barely stand CIO and tried everything I could prior to giving it a try but in the end it was what ended up being the best for our family.  I think the one thing you need to remind yourself that no matter what you're NOT hurting your child.  Your child does NOT feel abandoned.  And you're teaching your child to self-soothe, which in the end is a good thing for all.

  • As long as you?re sure he doesn?t have an infection, he?ll probably go back to sleeping on his own again pretty quickly. See how tonight goes. When we did Ferber?s progressive wait with DD, she went to sleep much faster the second night.

If it makes you feel better, DD loves being able to fall asleep on her own. She tries to get into her crib when she?s tired.

  • Yeah, we also have always rocked him to sleep so probably need to put him to bed when he is drowsy too

  • I know it's soooo hard, and I thought DS would hate me forever, but they don't remember and are just as happy to see you in the morning.

It was really tough to do, but it's soooo worth the effort.  DS doesn't fuss at all now when we put him down, he goes right to sleep and we're all soo much happier!!

  • And, I don't know if your son has any or is into blankets, but DS LOVES really soft blankets.  He only gets one when he's in his crib so he enjoys when we put him down and he gets to hold the blanket.
  • I did CIO w/my oldest when she was 10ish months.  It was the best thing I ever did.  And I would have paid good money for her to only cry for 30 min.  It was much, much worse for us unfortunately.  However, I know people who didn't nip it in the bud before the kiddo got older & now they still have their 2, 3, 4 + yr olds having sleep issues.  It sounds like he's doing well only crying for that amount of time, whining & getting himself back to sleep.  I think within a few nights, you'll be golden- don't give it up!
  • We failed.  DS now sleeps with up permanently...  and at this rate he'll continue until he's 21 because we are so done trying to get him to sleep on his own.  He just freaks out.  But, good luck to you.
  • Stay strong! I assure you, you will be thrilled with the results if you see it through.

  • we had nasty recurrent infections from six months to one year. he never freakin' slept!! We had PE tubes in at one year and things got better in a serious hurry, and then fell apart horribly. it was his molars!! you might want to ask your pedi. or ENT how close you are to having molars pop through... DS took the better part of three months for his to come all the way in!

Can't tell you how many dr's visits we had, with me convinced it was another ear infection, to have them tell me his ears were beautiful!

  • Honestly, around 1 year we knew DD could STTN, but still woke up 1x/night.  After reading HSHHC, we followed the advice of turning off the monitor and letting her CIO whenever she woke up in the middle of the night.  We can still hear her if she totally screams (like she did this morning at 5 am), but now she will just go back to sleep in a few minutes.
