My Boobs can't take it!

Gwendolyn has been attached to my breasts since 5am this morning. I am thinking growth spurt? Goodness though, my boobs feel like flappy pancakes, how can there possibly be any more milk in there? She just WON'T STOP EATING. It is 1:30pm and I haven't had a chance to eat myself. I am home alone so there is no one to help me out.

And she doesn't sleep a lot =( When is this going to get better?

  • Ditto PP.  She might be comfort nursing.

  • My LO does this when he doesn't get enough naptime. He gets overtired and just goes to town on the comfort nursing. What helped me was to anticipate when he would need a nap and make sure to put him down for it. He doesn't usually fall asleep of his own volition. I'm doing the 2-3-4 nap pattern and it's working pretty well except he doesn't always like that last nap!

  • Riley was doing this around weeks 2-3, and it was totally comfort nursing. i offered her a paci and she's lovin' it. She is also the type of baby who loves sucking, she needs something in her mouth pretty much at all times, better the paci than my boob 24/7 lol
  • She may have hit the 3wk growth spurt ... we're in the middle of it, too.  It's totally hard but it passes pretty quickly.  Hang in there!  Do you have something quick and easy to eat one handed around for you?  Granola bars, toast, etc.?  You need to make sure you're taking care of yourself, particularly when she's sucking so many calories out of you!

  • I try to give her the paci but she starts screaming and spits it out. Since she is sucking on her fist I take that as a hunger sign.

I don't know how to get her to go down. She gets SO upset. I thought they were too young to try and get them to go down?

  • It's almost certainly the growth spurt. You HAVE to eat something. Like PP said, make a bagel or toast or something quick but you need energy. Growth spurts usually last 2-3 days but can go up to a week. DD will only be quiet when nursing and she won't sleep. Nothing will soothe her. Finally she will pass out and sleep for several hours (at least that's what happened for us at the 3 and 6 week spurts).

Honestly, I'd pop in a movie, sit on the couch and let her nurse. It's not as bad once you're in the right mental place to deal with this. Hang in there. This will pass and she will be back to normal in a few days. It sucks, but it's totally normal (and actually good!)

  • Wow! that is an incredible feeding. I thought 6 hours straight last night was a long one but you have me beat. I asked our lactation consultant about this and said infants will do this for a while but the duration of the cluster feeds and frequency of them should lessen except for growth spurts.

  • DS did the same thing to me for about a day and a half.  I swear he ate CONSTANTLY.  Thank goodness I had some cliff bars in the house b/c it was all but impossible to feed myself that day and DH was at work.  It does end.  I promise.  Today DS seems like all he wants to do is sleep.  I keep trying to wake him for a snack but he just falls asleep at my boob.  (Totally sucks b/c today is DH's day off... so of course now he thinks DS is ALWAYS this perfect little sleeper... ugh.)

we definitely went through this around 3 weeks... and after all the extra stimulation, you'll produce more milk the next day, and so on.. it does get better, I found bananas to be easy food while BFing, and be sure to drink LOTS of water...
