Trying to Get Pregnant

Should we get the flu shot since we are TTC?

I've never taken the shot before, but I think its recommended for pregnant women.  Have you heard the same?

Re: Should we get the flu shot since we are TTC?

  • I have been wondering this exact thing.  I rarely get sick, am super vigilant durning flu season and have never had the flu vaccination, but I'm wondering if I should this year.

  • I have heard radio announcements that they are recommending it for everyone this year.  I've never had one but plan to get it this year.

  • I am-I "have" to regardless-my mom is a nurse Big Smile and she stays on us about it. Also, it's one less thing to worry about when we DO actually get KU. IMO, it's easy, and why not?

  • Yes!!

I may be biased - I am an RN and our ICU had a pregnant woman with flu last year, she was very ill.

I work with critically ill adults so you bet I am going to get it (and I rarely get sick).

  • If you read the insert on the vaccine, it tells you that it has never been tested or proven safe on pregnant women. Also, the H1N1 vaccine is combined with the flu shot this year. The H1N1 vaccine was directly linked to 3,000 miscarriages and stillborns last year.

  • The flu can also cause harm to a fetus. https://www.digitaljournal.com/article/276597

  • This is why I say no, for now.

Every time I get the flu shot, I get the flu.

Each year I don't get it, I don't get the flu.

I work with kids 11 hours/day and after realizing this pattern and telling my mom, who is a nurse, she said she would stop getting it too.

Now as for being KU, that might be different and might take some serious thought.

  • I agree DaisyJanie! I am an RN and have never seen a study linking miscarriage/stillbirths to the vaccine. In fact the American Clinical Obstetrics Group is recommeding that all women pregnant or trying to conceive receive the flu/H1N1 vaccine. In addition CA is seeing a large number of baby deaths related to pertussis so there is a strong recommendation that both parents or parents to be vaccinate against pertussis.

I do suggest reading the vaccine inserts and looking up statistics and warnings on the CDC website before injecting yourself with anything. You can always decide to vaccinate after you've done research, but you can't unvaccinate.

I'm looking now. You have to have credible sources-Google not being one of them. Did find an MD's answer on WebMD- https://blogs.webmd.com/focus-on-flu/2009/10/h1n1-flu-your-questions-answered.html

LOL we posted at the same time. To each their own! I'm getting one, to me the reports suggest irrevocable harm to a fetus if you catch the flu.

which is precisely why I frequently wash my hands and take plenty of vitamin d. :) I am certainly not here to start a vaccine debate, and I don't think there is a single right answer for everyone. I think that people should do real research (not just talking to their doctor, family and friends - real research.) before injecting themselves with something that cannot be uninjected.

  • Of all the deaths from H1N1, (which all in all, wasn't really that many) 6% of them were pregnant women. https://www.reuters.com/article/idUSTRE56S1GW20090729

That, combined with the fact that I am an ICU RN and take care of some pretty sick people, You betcha I'll be getting mine this year (as I always do).

If it really bugs you, try to find one without Thimiserol, a preservative. The ones that are typically given to pregnant women do not have the preservative in them. I got mine during my last pregnancy.

Plus, if you aren't pregnant yet, I'm not really sure how getting the vaccine would affect your fetus anyway...if anything, your body will have made the antibodies to fight the flu, and you'll pass those antibodies on to your baby.

  • I won't chance getting the shot. I will just wash my hands often and eat healthy.
