Babies: 3 - 6 Months

I think I have created a bad habit!

So, during this whole 4 mo wakeful....(past 4 weeks & going strong!)  I have nursed my LO back to sleep.... No good.

After realizing that this is creating a habit I have since tried to re-swaddle (as she busts a hand out and frantically tries eating it!) and give her the binky....all looks well and 10 min later her hand is out again and she is ferociously eating it again.

Thus, I nurse her and she goes back to sleep.  I know I need to just break her of habit by going "cold - turkey" but, its sooo hard when I have to work next day.  :(

Any other suggestions?  LOL (that's a desperate ? in hopes of there really being an alternative)  ;)

Re: I think I have created a bad habit!

  • I always nursed DD back to sleep during the 4 month wakeful (for us lasted from about 2 weeks before she was 4 months til about a week after - maybe 3 weeks total). Once she got through the whole waking up at night thing she was fine... I don't think she was "waking up" to nurse... she was just waking up - period. Nursing was the easiest and quickest solution for me to get her back to sleep - which meant I got to go back to sleep. The last month we've had no issues. Maybe I'm lucky... But I never saw a problem with nursing back to sleep!

  • Thanks!!!  Part of me thinks that it shouldn't be an issue, as she eats like she's starving....but, I dont want to be "shooting" myself in the foot for down the road.... it's definitely the quickest and most efficient way to get her and I back to sleep quickly!

DS needs to nurse back to sleep too.  Honestly, I don't have that much of a problem with it.  We cosleep, so I literally move my boob so he can reach it and go back to sleep.  I realize it might be a "bad habit," but right now the bottom line is that we both need sleep.  If he's 6 mo and still doing it then I will be more concerned.

OK!  Thanks, this makes me feel better knowing its not just me!  :)

Thanks.  I am someone who doesnt believe that baby cries just to cry.  There's a reason.  I, too, believed that if she is up at night, it's cause she's hungry....but, then the pedi, other parents etc say, "you're creating a bad habit" Sooo I started to think maybe I had.  :)

I needed this article to remind me!  And, Payton is definitely interested in every little noise during the day...very interested in new things :)

  • If she's trying to eat her hand and is waking up, maybe she's actually hungry.

I mostly agree...although she "eats" her hand All.Day.Long LOL.  She will go straight from eating to fist in mouth.  Pedi believes she's teething/feeling movement under gums.  So, while it's likely she's hungry, she also does the fist thing all day every day....

  • Do what you feel is best and what works for you and your family.  If you're fine with it and you're only considering changing because other people are telling you to, screw 'em!  We still nurse at night too, but bed sharing makes it easy :)

DS gnaws on his hands all day too, lol.
