Just take it away. Seriously. Our DD was a paci addict, couldn't go to sleep w/o it. About a month before her 1st bday we just through them all away. She had a fit on and off for two days, but was pretty easily distracted. The first night she woke up 4 or 5 times and needed to be rocked back to sleep, but the second night she only woke up once. After two days she was over it.
When I was a nanny we made a big production of putting the little boy's paci in his crib when he woke up for the morning and after naps. He got so excited to throw it in his crib and didn't remember to ask for it because it was out of sight.
ETA: I totally missed that you want to totally get rid of it. I thought you were just trying to get rid of it during the day. Sorry--my advice is not very helpful.
a friend told me about byebyebinky.com (spelling may be off) and that worked wonders for us...never had any issues, only asked for it a couple times...very painless process...good luck!
I just took it away cold turkey, she fussed for it during nap time and bed time, but that lasted only a few days. I threw them away, that way I couldn't give in and give them back to her.
Re: Give me your best paci breaking tips!
DS never took a paci (he is a thumb sucker!), but I have heard of two techniques:
1) take paci to a new baby you know and make a big deal of "gifting it". FWIW, at 18 mo, I don't know if he'd "get it".
2) cut the end of the paci and apparently it can't be "sucked".
Sorry I am not more help. Good luck! Your son is waaaaay too handsome to have a paci covering his face!

This is what we did: https://beingwhatiwanttobe.blogspot.com/2010/06/bye-bye-pacifier.html
And a follow-up later on: https://beingwhatiwanttobe.blogspot.com/2010/07/life-after-pacifier_20.html
My sister snipped the end of it and that was it. It was very easy for her. lol
DD stopped taking the paci at 4 mths.
