Teachers who missed the beginning of the year

I am going back on the 27th and I will have missed the first 7 weeks of school.  I don't really know how I am going to work getting into the groove of my old classroom.

How would you work your first day?  Review rules, maybe a "getting to know you" writing prompt?  or would you just jump into lesson plans?  How much would you talk about yourself?  I'm nervous to jump into a classroom that already has an established routine.

Re: Teachers who missed the beginning of the year

  • I would probably revisit rules, procedures and expectations.  The kids will probably be curious about you and your baby so adding in a few getting to know you activities would be nice. Good Luck going back!!!

  • That is tough...........missing out on the  beginning  of the year. But I would review the rules and a get to know you writing assignment would be good. I bet by Nov. it will be like you were there on the 1st day... good luck !

  • What level do you teach? I was in this exact situation last year - went back actually at the beginning of November.  I teach high school, and the kids did want to know about the baby, etc.  I talked about that for a few minutes and then jumped right in to teaching...but made sure that the first few days were easy enough. I really took it slow getting into the swing of things. I will say - it was weird. It felt like the beginning of the year for me, but not for them.  It was ultimately fine, though!  Don't stress too much....it will be ok!
