We have a Chicco Keyfit with the base installed in the center. There are only latches behind the driver and passenger so I have to use the shoulder strap. Problem is I can't get the shoulder strap to tighten enough - I tighten it every single time I put her in the car and typically it's okay but when we go farther from home I notice the base loosens to the point I can shove it down several inches in the backseat. SIL rode with me today and she was able to shove it as well and pushed it quite a bit. More than I am comfortable with so I finally pulled over and moved the base behind the drive so I could use the latches.
I want to keep her in the middle but I think the issue is there is a slight bump in the middle seat so the base cannot stay flat and perhaps that is affecting the locking of the shoulder belt. I have calls in to both Chicco and my car manufacturer. I have a 2010 Acura TL so if anyone has the same car, do you have the same problem?
Has anyone else had issues like this? Would you just move the car seat to behind driver or passenger? I really want to keep her in the infant seat as long as I can but I will move up to a convertible if I have to - think that will stay in place in the middle? Any other suggestions or tips? I am taking it to get inspected tomorrow. Thanks.
Re: Infant car seat help/advice needed
did you pull the shoulder belt all the way out and then let it wind itself back in?
that was the only way we could get mine to lock. i have the same issue in my car (rogue) and it works fine now.
Ditto this - on our cars, we have to pull the shoulder belt all the way out, and then let it wind little by little, pulling it out really hard at several intervals as it winds back if that makes sense.
Yes, we do this. DH is better at it so I have him do it more often but it still loosens up.
I had a TL (although it was a 2002) and I had the carseat base (Graco) behind the passenger seat. We had no problems with this setup. Now that I have the MDX, she is in the center, but I agree that it sounds like the seat my be better suited and easier for you in a different location not in the center.
Post this on car-seat.org. CPS techs will tell you their experiences with that seat and car and you don't even have to register to ask a question.
If it's the seatbelt itself and not the shape of the seat, maybe it would stay tight if you used the locking clip instead of the seatbelt retractor.
That was going to be my question... are you using the locking clip once you get it tight?
This. I would move it. But we had C there from the beginning. He's in the conv seat now and is still on the side - I would have to move my seat too far forward to put him in the middle. I might put him in the middle once he's FF, but who knows.
I would be impossible for us to put him in the middle RF in DHs truck. It's a cab & a half and with him behind the passenger seat it is so far forward I can't sit there! We wouldn't be able to drive.
Yes, we are. I will post to carseat.org too. Thanks ladies!
