This is a place for any of you who are experiencing the world of azoospermia. Whether you were recently diagnosed and are trying to make sense of it all, or you have started preparing for IVF or IUI, or have decided instead to move on to adoption. Please join in the group by posting! Check in is on Thursdays.
Learning that the chances of having a biological child with your husband are slim to none is not easy, and is, frankly, devastating news. This check in is a place where we can share how we are coping (or not) with our new realities, provide information we've learned through investigating our options, adjusting our lifelong dreams and plans, and dealing with the situation.
I'd like to extend an invitation to those who have been fortunate enough to experience pregnancy, childbirth, and/or adoption. Ultimately, all of us desire to create a family. The experiences and insight of those who have reached that goal will be quite helpful to those of us on that road.
AZOO SUCCESS STORIES! (Whether through IUI/IVF or Adoption)

Re: ~~ZERO SPERM / AZOOSPERMIA CHECK IN~~
Update: We are scheduled for our informed consent meeting with the RE, my PAP, physical, SIS and mock ET tomorrow! Since all of our IF is due to DHs cancer, I have not been checked out yet at all (besides b/w). I just hope everything goes smoothly and there are no issues.

Update: I start Lupron on Wed. Eek I am so excited! Today I am going to hand over all our savings to the RE's office. It has been a really long time since we only had like $500 in savings. Scares the crap out of me to be honest!
QOTW: No one in my family has dealt with IF. All of DH's siblings are dealing with IF in some way. BIL/SIL - SIL was unexplained they ended up adopting. SIL/BIL - SIL has a clotting disorder they did IVF. Other BIL/SIL have decided to live child-free, I am not sure if that was by choice or not.

Update: Nothing new to report. We're still waiting for DH's next SA in October. We're still trying on our own though just in case a miracle happens.
Kuleama, hope that everything checked out perfect for you!
Question of the week: I am not aware of any IF in our family. My SIL has had a miscarriage, but she was able to get pregnant again within the normal year's time. No one else had any issues at all.
7lbs 13oz 20 inches long
Question of the Week:
Have other family members struggled with IF?
Well, not in the technical sense, but strangely enough my sister & I both used donor sperm, though it was her wife who carried both of their kids. Who would ever have guessed we would have THIS, of all things, in common! I think it's great that our kids will have their cousins to relate to when it comes to their origins.
By the way, we are TTC #2 and were successful on our 1st try but it ended in m/c at 5w 4d. Just had our 2nd attempt and it looks like this one failed. We have used up our vials of the same donor we used to conceive LO, so may have to move on to a new donor. Not our ideal, but a 1/2-sibling is better than no sibling!
LO #1 - 1 unmedicated/self-monitored IUI w/ donor sperm.
LO #2 - 1 m/c, 2 BFNs, 4th IUI worked (unmedicated/self-monitored with new donor sperm).
Life is beautiful!
I'm sorry for your loss.
Me - DX Hashimoto's Disease, Hypothyroid, Rheumatoid Arthritis
DH - DX Azoospermia - Sertoli Cell Syndrome
DS-IUI #1-4 BFN IVF #1 - BFP! It's a boy!!!
Update: Found of about 3rd failed D-IUI on Monday. Currently on a break until the timing works out and we feel that there is a good chance of success. We only have two vials left, those are likely my two last attempts at ever being pregnant.
DH's aunt and uncle struggled with IF and are childless. Our IF is also due to cancer, there seems to be multiples of us in this posting with this situation, so a non-genetic component. Unfortunately, my family seems to be super fertile. My less than 20 year old cousin recently had her second child. Sucker.punch.
I've mainly been just reading posts lately and not responding. But I'm thinking of everyone, azoo and otherwise, and sending out all the positive thoughts I have! Good luck ladies!
Hitched I have been searching for an update from you. I am so sorry that this cycle didn't work. (((hugs))) I will be thinking of you.

nothing new- just waiting for the appointment on 9/27 for DH with the urologist...
I have mentioned donor sperm few times to my husband-and he is ALL against it - I think he thinks that we will be able to have a baby together (he says he will do whatever it takes--not scared of needles or surgery...) And I think he feels like there may be a sense of- well, the baby isn't part of him...
But I remind him, your stepdad and your mom raised you- and your step dad and he isn't part of you by blood- and look how good you turned out...lol : ) And he loves you just like your were a part of him-he is even closer to you than his own son
I would like to think that too that we will be able to have a baby through ivf/icsi, but in the back of my mind, I have keep my mind open to all other things... I have looked at adoption agencies-which I think may be our best bet, kind of reading people's stories on here too, and the people that have had successes with ivf/icsi with MFI...
I talked to my sister about donor sperm- and she said it would be hard to find a donor with the same ethnicity (Filipino/French-Canadian) as my husband-and she is right from the donor sites I have seen on line have nothing even close...
Anyone have a DH that doesn't like the subject of donor sperm?
Not everyone is open to DS and really you should both be on the same page with whatever route you take. But there is still a chance that your DH has sperm so don't give up on that either. Your DH probably isn't ready to deal with the worst case scenario yet.
In regards to finding a donor that is of the same decent you could always do the photo matching consults with the cryobanks. You may not end up with a donor of the same ancestry, but they may look just like your DH. My DH was really stuck on finding someone with German/Irish ancestry and ultimately the donor the cryobank said looked most like my DH and met all our criteria was not of the same ancestry, but they said the match was really good. Our donors baby pic looks a lot like my DH as a child, they could be siblings. I just thought I would mention that because we would never have considered the donor they matched us with if we had just stuck with the specific ancestry.

oh I didn't even know that they had that option at the cryobanks... The photos. that is neat...
How was your husband when y'all first discussed donor sperm? And I am just thinking what I would l tell a child about how they "came to be" I am just trying to prepare myself for the worst- while hoping and praying for the best... You can PM me if you need to
update-well 3rd and 4th beta were awful (see bio), so i've stopped the prometrium and am just waiting for AF/ to m/c and we will try again. hoping this happens VERY quickly so we move on to iui #3.
Have other family members struggled with IF? one of my cousins has several miscarriages, but never underwent any IF treatment and has 2 daughters. my other cousin had secondary IF and conceived DD #2 with iui.I'm so sorry for all the bad news this week
No update here. DH and I still haven't quite figured out what we're going to do next.
QOTW: My mom's sister dealt with IF but I'm not sure what she and her DH ended up doing. From some comments my mom made I'm guessing medicated IUI.
DH wasn't willing to discuss DS until after his biopsy. After the followup appoint, where we were given a 20-30% chance of finding sperm through mTESE, we started talking. He wants to try and would always wonder if there was a chance. So we are doing mTESE w/IVF w/ICSI. We will be using DS as a backup. If we pay 16K to "try" we don't want to walk away without a chance to get pregnant. He is okay with it and wants me to experience pregnancy. It took a few months and some researching to get to that point though.
DH's uncle apparently could not father a child. We really don't know his issues. They adopted a son, he is now 26.
My Aunt and Uncle tried for years, my uncle had a son from a previous marriage. They had adoption application etc. signed and sealed for the mail when she found out she was pregnant. Because it took so long for them to get pregnant, they didn't use protection and they had #2 13 months after #1. They ended up having 4 children. I guess their issues resolved itself. I wish our issues were something that would resolve itself.
IF really sucks.
I am reading "Helping the Stork". While it doesn't specifically tell you how to announce to the child, it brings up all the different viewpoints and many different issues that donor insemination will present. I feel much more prepared to make a decision and your husband may benefit from the information in this book.
I am so sorry for the losses and BFNs this week.
Update: Still need to keep seeing the uro. DH went this week and the good news is we finally had an appointment where there was no bad news. DH's physical exam went well. Now onto more b/w (for the testosterone), an ultrasound, and another SA.
QOTW: DH's mom and two aunts all suffered IF. DH's mom is the only one able to conceive and carry a child to full term. It makes me sad but I also wonder what else could have been done. I feel like MIL is the only one who sought medical treatment, the others just accepted living childless. They live vicariously through neices and nephews, but that just adds more pressure to us having a baby!
I'm sorry for you loss. (((hugs)))

The photo matching is a great service. Roslln2 also used the photo matching at CA Cryo and ended up going with a donor at Xytec, I think, where you can see adult pics. She said that their donor is the spitting image of her DH.
Well our journey to DS was long! DH did not take the azoo dx well and really shut down. We started ttc in Aug 2004 and didn't get the final dx until March 2007 because DH was so shell shocked and closed off. Once he came to terms with the final dx after the biopsy he was ready to make the DS or adoption decision. He knew I was fine with either option and that the decision was his to make. Once he made the decision he was full steam ahead and completely comfortable. For me I really want to have a family with my DH so how we get there is not as important as actually getting there. That doesn't mean the dx was not hard because it was devastating, but ultimately I want to parent and be a family with my DH more than anything.
As for telling our children, we are of the thought process to tell early and often. We are very open with everyone so not telling is not an option. We want our child to know that they are special, that we wanted them more than anything, that in a way we choose them. We also believe strongly that telling early and in age appropriate language/scenarios that they will never feel that the way they were conceived is a secret or shameful. I think that my problem with waiting to tell until adulthood or not telling, is that it leads the child to believe that there is something shameful/secretive/wrong/different about their conception even if that is not true. Obviously everyone has their own reasons for telling or not telling, but those are ours. Our child(ren) will be such an amazing blessing we want them to always know how much of a blessing they are.

QOTW: Out of my three siblings, two have kids and the other is only 18. H's two siblings both have children. However, I do have an IF aunt who eventually adopted and H has a cousin who just adopted twin boys b/c he has issues. We don't know exactly what the issues are b/c he won't talk about it though.
