March 2011 Moms

Are you planning to...

Make your own baby food? I would like to, I just think it's so easy and so much cheaper that there's no good reason for me not to. I also like the fact that I can make it with zero preservatives or added "stuff" and with organic fruits and veggies. What's your take on baby food? Are you making your own or buying it? Just wondering how many other mommas are into this kind of stuff.Smile

  • I would love to, but I'll have to see how my time and energy levels are when that time comes.  A food blog I read, www.smittenkitchen.com has some good recipes and tips for making your own.  The link is on the left hand side of her page.

  • As easy as it is, it is really hard not to!

  • I definitely plan to at least try it. I think you can acclimate the LO to more flavors that way and (hopefully) lead to a less picky eater later on!

  • I absolutely plan to.  It just makes so much sense to me $-wise and nutrition-wise.
  • Here are a couple of websites I've found with lots of wonderful information:

    https://www.wholesomebabyfood.com/index.htm

    https://www.homemade-baby-food-recipes.com/index.html

As for the baby food maker, I saw that one at BRU and while I love it, I just can't justify that kind of money. I doubt anyone would purchase it for me. Here's a link to the one I think I'm actually going to get:

  • I did with my first.  My grandmother gave me the Beaba Babycook for Christmas that year when DD was about 6 months and I LOVED it.  My best friend said if I can do it, anyone can, because I am so ridiculously ADD and always crazy hahaha.  It really is amazingly easy and cheap.  I could even cook salmon in it!  I would just cut up squash from our garden, for example, and steam it while I cooked our dinner.  And then I would take an afternoon on a Sunday and make enough to freeze on a piece of wax paper.  Then I could defrost it in a jar in the Babycook for the rest of the week.  My grandmother was so excited that it worked so well.  I can't wait to use it again for this LO.

DD would have her own little meals of a piece of salmon, green beans, all steamed and on her plate! I credit that to her being such a good eater now, because it made it so easy to introduce good, healthy foods to her fresh. I mean, this is a toddler who eats Asparagus for crying out loud.  Of course, she is a lot like DH and he loves all types of vegetables, so it is probably good genes as well :)

  • I also plan to and plan to register for the link pp included. I love to cook and find it to be relaxing so I have no doubt I'll enjoy making baby food.

You should also look into the "Magic Bullet".  I have one and use it for A LOT!  I have even already tried the baby food and it worked really good.

  • Absolutely!  Little one will eat what we eat.  I've looked at the Beaba Babycook before, but I think I can do the same thing with the kitchen equipment I already have.

  • Most things I'm gonna- but I will buy jars for convience factors from time to time.  I will puree fruits and veggies, but probably not meat- i can't stomach it.

  • I was raised on "homemade babyfood" which was usually just whatever my parents were eating made squishy.  I will absolutely do the same.  Organic baby food costs a fortune, making it yourself isn't really expensive though.

  • We won't make our own, but with our last 2 we delayed solids and went straight to table foods (for food allergy/GI reasons).  Our youngest will eat whatever we are eating.  We don't do anything special to grind it up.  We just cut it small and let her eat it with her hands.

We do occasionally feed her jarred food for convenience when we're out and about.

  • Love the idea of it- but realistically need to see how good I can get about keeping up w/ a baby's schedule b/f I decide to do it.

  • That's something I would love to try.  We have our own garden so making veggie baby food wouldn't be a problem.  And we have a magic bullet so I'm good there.

  • With my first I made some (easy vegetables like green beans, sweet potatoes, carrots, peas) and bought some of the stuff I didn't want to even try to tackle.  Plus it was winter/spring when he was starting on some solids and a lot of fruits were out of season and expensive...so I figured it was easier and cheaper to just buy some and make the ones I felt more comfortable with making.

  • I made all of DS's food and it is really easy.  I would just do it all on Sunday (maybe 30 min.) and would have enough for the week, especially when we were just starting solids and he didn't eat too much.  I went to a baby shower once where we had to taste jarred baby food and guess what it was.  It all tasted TERRIBLE, kind of like plastic with a hint of whatever fruit/veggie it was supposed to be.  Just reaffirmed that I was doing a good thing.
  • I'm planning to make my own baby food as well!

  • I hadn't really thought about it but I'm really lazy when it comes to cooking because I hate doing it and so DH and I don't eat the best because we don't like to cook sometimes.  I am going to force myself to cook when LO comes along because I want him/her to grow up on nautral foods and not all the chemicals that are out there.  We live in the country so fresh food is not hard to come by, I will probably just take a little of whatever we're eating and cut up really small for lo or smush it for them.
