bookshelves & LOs

Do you have bookshelves around where your LOs can play? Have you blocked them off in some manner, or do you just living with taking the books/DVDs/etc away when they get into them?

We did not block ours off in any way. We did, however, make sure they were secured to the wall so there was no risk of them toppling over onto LOs. I think we removed any fragile items off those lower shelves {just in case} but otherwise, we made sure to keep an eye on LO's and tell them "no, no" and re-direct them to something more interesting when they started going after the items.

We don't block ours. Most of the ones in the new house are built in so we don't have to worry about tipping. DD loves nothing more than taking the books/DVDs/CDs off the shelves and putting them back. DH isn't a big fan of her doing this, but I don't mind. There are no breakables on the shelves she can reach and she hasn't quite figured out yet how to open DVD and CD cases so they are all safe for the moment. To be honest at 18 months, she doesn't do this as much as she did around a year. Now there are far more interesting things for her to play with.

It's open season on the shelves around our house, and I'm looking forward to DS being interested in putting things back - he just likes taking them off right now. We've moved items we feel he shouldn't touch out of his reach for now. He does listen to "no" but we try not to have it be every other word out of our mouths.

we have attached our bookshelves to the wall because DD is a crazy climber. If she was just pulling the books/dvds off it would be one thing but after I saw her manuever herself onto the second shelf (and trying to figure out how to go higher)- it was time to bolt them to the wall.
