Car Seat and PNP Questions

About the car seat, we got the Chicco KeyFit 30 and are planning to use it with a base in my car, a base in DH's car, and the adaptor for the City Mini.  It matches both my stroller and the diaper bag (all are mostly red).  However, my mom just received a gently used Peg Perego Primo Viaggio with the base from a relative.  It's less than a year old and they barely used it since they had one in each car (ahh, it's good to have money).  The seat is navy blue b/c they had a boy.  We're wondering now if we should return our Chicco seat/bases and just get the extra bases for the Peg Perego and exchange the adaptor for the one that goes with the Peg Perego.  We'd probably save ourselves $100 - so it's not a dire necessity but could help out with other items we don't have.  Also, the Chicco was a gift from MIL so IDK if it'll be an issue if we return it.  WWYD????

The PNP question is simpler and probably a dumb question - can you use the bassinett feature with the changing table feature at the same time?  That's how we currently have it assembled and I've seen it at friend's houses like that. It does seem like a newborn can fit  anyway off to the side.  But, with the SIDS risk, is it okay to leave the changing table feature on the side while baby sleeps in the bassinett all night?

Re: Car Seat and PNP Questions

  • I persoanlly would not put a newborn in a used carseat. So, i wouldn't care about the colors, but i wouldn't feel comfortable with a used one.

The PNP changing thing can stay there, it flips closed I think but can stay attached.

  • In regards to the car seat- I wouldn't use a used carseat even if it's only a year old and barely used. However, right now you can take it to Babies R Us and they will give you a 25% off coupon or something like that...
  • I must be the odd woman out because I have no trouble using a used car seat from someone I know. I have to admit, if someone had offered me a gently used car seat for my first, I probably would have said no because I wanted to buy everything new, but since I have learned how stupid that was...lol, in my defense I was 22. Christian has all hand me downs, including his infant car seat who was given to us by a friend since hers was much newer that the one I had.
  • I wanted to add, will you husband be driving the baby a lot? If not, can peg per egos be used without the car base? Graco's can and it's just as safe . Just an FYI.
  • I definitely understand about the USED car seat situation.  We had a similar situation with a crib and opted for a new one.  But, in this case, the car seat is coming from a family member and it is a highly rated one.

I have read that most car seats can be used without the base.  We were going to ask the car seat technician about that when we go to our appointment.  We will be using the car seat in both cars often b/c the plan is for DH to drop off baby at my mom's and I'll pick her up.  My mom just wanted a car seat for herself as well in case she needs to go out with the baby so that's why our relative gave her the Peg Perego.

I think we'll just take both car seats and the bases to the car seat technician and see what her recommendations are.

  • I personally say keep your car seat/2 bases and let your MIL keep the peg perego in her car. That way everything you have matches and your MIL still has something to use with the baby. I understand that the peg perego rates highly (these are the ones we bought) but peg perego bases can add up. Trust me we have the 2 bases plus additionals for DH's car. I am all about convenience and I'd rather click in a carseat quickly, having to deal with 2 babies at once. At least you will all have bases to make life easier and a complete matching set. :) JMHO

Oh and since the carseat is coming from a close relative in which you trust and has not been in any type of accident, then I don't see any concern. Very rare peg pergo has had a recall on their carseats in the past year. You can always call with the model # to verify.

  • Since carseat came from family, I would have no problem using it.  With that being said, I would keep the seats you currently have and have your mom keep the used seat, for when she goes out... but it just dawned on me that when your DH drops off, he has to leave your carseat at mom's b/c you need it to get baby back home.  HHMM.  And since gift was from MIL, I'd feel bad returning it.  Tough one!  LOL  And the Peg Perego carseat can be latched to a car w/out a base... the base is just for added convenience of snaping on.

    Sorry I wasn't much help.

You bring up a good point! It's true that for drop/off pick/up, we'd leave the car seat anyway at my mom's. So, I don't really see the need for her to have the Peg Perego.  But, I could trade in the Peg Perego for a coupon for a convertible car seat since we do not have that yet.

I guess it's a good thing that we have all these options.  I just need to decide what to do with all these items.

  • If you opt to do like a pp mentioned - I have Peg Perego infant seat and it is very easy to use without a base.  We had a few times we had to do it.  It's even easier with a base - but nothing difficult and I felt 100% confident that my baby was safe.  The best thing I could have done was when the tech that was installing my car seat I asked a ton of questions and know what to look for when my seat is installed if it is in correctly or not.  I can install car seats with the best of them.

  • Like Rach said, the Peg Perego is very safe even w/out the base.  When we bought it, the sales person, which seemed VERY educated, informed us he uses it w/ his son and occassionally w/out the base, and he feels it is very secure.  He informed us that the base is really only for convenience use.

Anyway, I suppose the best option would be to trade in the seat at BRU for the coupon to be used for the convertible.  Remember though that BBB always has the 20% off coupons, and it works on Britax (MIL used it to buy ours).  And right now, Britax redesigned their seats, so the 2009 model is on super sale at BBB (awesome deals).  Just an FYI.
