WDYT of Keturah?

I had a friend in elementary school named Keturah and I've always liked the name. When I mentioned it to DH last night as a possible girl name, he seemed to like it (our first pick is Olivia, since "Oliver" is a HUGE family name, but it's just getting too popular at this point).

He also said we could call her "Kat", but I don't really like that nn...any other nn suggestions?

  • I used to babysit a little girl named Keturah, and she was awesome.  It's a biblical name (not a popular one) and I like it.

  • I disagree with the other posters. I love the name Keturah. I love how unusual and underused it is and I love that it has great nicknames like Kat. (I think that's a good compromise, btw -- I am doing the same thing with my husband -- I get the name I want, he gets the nickname he wants). And it's SO much better than trendy Olivia. I like Olivia but wow, overused!

Have you read the book KETURAH AND LORD DEATH? I think ti was a National Book Award finalist (winner?) a few years back. Great book -- it's a Young Adult novel, told kind of like a fairy tale, and that Keturah is a really admirable character.

Who is Keturah in the Bible? I've heard some obscure ones (my sister's name is Arah...doesn't get much more obscure than that), but I've NEVER heard Keturah.

How is it pronounced? I'm pronouncing it keh-TER-uh, which doesn't sound pretty to me at all.

I agree with PP. It doesn't sound like a real name, even though it seems it is. I can't say that I like it, but I do like that it's an unusual biblical name.

Ohhhh...Somehow that name has slipped me my entire life.

    That is a prettier pronunciation.

I think I like it. Yes

    Yep!
I'm familiar with the name and I don't think it's terrible, but I think it might be a hard name to live with.

  • It is my name. I get compliments all the time and I love having the name. Unique but not made up. It is pronounced Ke ture a. I have to spell it EVERY time but not a big deal. And it sounds nothing like Ketchup or Ketuba nor has anyone told me to my face that it reminds them of that.
  • I would say it sounds like something I would tell someone after they sneeze!
