Flu shot

We were just talking about flu shots today at work, and I was told it was really important I should get one this year since I am pregnant. I have never got a flu shot in my life and did not plan on doing it this year.  Just wondering what everyones thoughts were on this??

    I heard the same thing that it's important to get a flu shot.  Unfortunately, I had one a few years ago and it made me very sick.  It was like I got the flu twice as bad as I probably would have.  Make sure you talk to your doctor first about the side effects.

    im going to talk to my doc at my next appt as well about this. I had the flu actually only once in my entire life, when i was prego with my first DD. it was horrible and the only thing i was allowed to take was tylenol which doesnt do anything. I had a fever of 101 and still came to work all that week.

    I really just don't know right now what I am going to do. My company offers it for $10 so that's a pretty good price. and I actually got a "regular" flu shot last year (didn't have the H1N1) and I was fine - didn't get sick or anything. Before that, I hadn't gotten a flu shot since high school. I'm just not sure if it's something I really need or not, but I do worry a little b/c my husband is a teacher and he is exposed to so many things that he could bring it home.

    Flu shots do not cause the flu. Really.

    I am normally pretty anti-vaccine unless completely necessary. Your immune system, however, IS lower when you are pregnant (hence the don't eat undercooked/raw food rule). I do not normally get a flu shot, but I will get one this year. Young, healthy people do not die from the flu, but the highest rate of people who DO die from the flu are pregnant woman and their unborn babies. To me, its a no-brainer. Saying "I never get sick, so I am not going to protect myself and my unborn child." Is a pretty niave statement. If this is the year you DO get the flu.... you are kind of screwed.

    Sorry to sound b!tchy. Its a soapbox for me bc I feel like people do not educate themselves enough and try to be "above" modern medicine.

    i got my h1n1 vac at my 16w appointment.  i have to go to walgreens or some place similar for the standard flu vac.  this is the first year for me- i did my research and decided it was the best choice for me and the babe.

    I've been debating the same thing.  I've never gotten a flu shot before either, but my doctor is recommending it (even though she admits she never got one while pregnant.)  But I am a teacher and definitely exposed to more germs than most.  I guess this will probably be my first year.

    If you do decide to get it, insist they give you the one that does not contain mercury.

    I have had this conservation with the RN and the fire chief in the town I work in. I have never had the flu shot and only had the flu once. My fear is that I will have a bad reaction to the shot and end up doing more damage then the flu may do if I get it. Both the RN the fire chief (how is incharge of emergencies in town) agreed. So I will not be getting a flu shot, besides being pregnant I am not high risk, we live in an old house that is drafty good for keeping air moving during the winter and I do not work with kids or the public that much.

    I will be getting a flu shot this year.  I typically get one every year, 2 years ago I opted not to get one and got the worst flu of my life.  I work in a counseling center located next to a health center, so germy students are common place and I want to take every measure to avoid getting sick.

    I haven't decided on this yet. When I worked in healthcare I got on each year because they were free and recommended but the past few years I haven't.

     I'm leaning toward getting one just because I've never had a reaction to it in the past and hubby works in a high-exposure job (I don't think I do). I'm going to talk to my OBGYN at my next appointment.

    I get mine tomorrow.  I have started getting one with my kids every year so that we all get it less severe and it bounces less between us.  Talk to your OB, but I have yet to meet one who says you shouldn't if you're not allergic to eggs or had an adverse reaction to one previously.  Plus this year's version is for three strains plus H1N1 and only a single shot.  Yay considering how much we're already being poked!

    This exactly. Except I normally get the flu shot every year (and have seen it work -- like last year when my husband got the flu (shot-less) and I took care of him all week long without catching it myself -- guess who's getting a shot too this year?).

    I've never gotten the flu shot and I've never gotten the flu.  I don't care what other people do, but for myself I don't really "believe in" getting it.  However, as a pregnant woman, you're high risk.  My doctor is recommending that I get the shot and I trust my doctor, so I'm planning on sucking it up.

    I want to get one, and I got an email today from my work saying that they're having a clinic for us all, to give us free shots.  But it said that they don't have the preservative-free version that's normally given to pregnant women.  This is the first I've heard that we aren't supposed to have the normal version... have you guys heard this?

    I hadn't, but at work yesterday another pregnant woman was asking the school nurse (I'm a teacher) if the shot my work is offering is free of preservatives, so I guess her doctor told her that.  I'm going to see what my doctor says at my upcoming appointment.
