RE: MBA + Mommyhood + WOH

From the anniversary thread below....

Ours is coming up too (the 29th) and I have no idea what we're going to do.  We can leave LO with my mom, but DH will have had a dental procedure the day before and may still be sore from that, plus my accelerated MBA starts on the 27th and I am fairly certain that I will have NO free time from then until I graduate in March 2012.  Seriously.  Since each course is only 5 weeks long I need to carve out 3-4 hours/day for the program which will be a challenge with a fulltime job and 8 month old baby.  Lingering over a long anniversary dinner sounds nice but not if I'll be stressing about reading assignments and school work.

Anyway, in your case, if you want a day at the beach I say bring LO along...because you're right....pumping every three hours, etc. sounds like a drag.

Wow, you're becoming a supermom! That sounds like a crazy schedule! I'm already stressed with working + baby...I could never add school on top of that! Props to you! Good luck!

Either that or I am incredibly naive and/or stupid for trying to do this right now.  After the shake up at work I felt I cannot rely at all upon my job security there and that if I want to be hirable (especially in the current job market) that an MBA would give me an edge that I currently don't have (a background in music and some non-artistic work experience is about all I've got going for me right now).

The reasoning is that it'll be "easier" to do this now, with only one child and the added support of my mom, who currently lives with us, and will look after LO when I need study time (my plan is to study when she's sleeping, we shall see how that goes).  We want to TTC this time next year and the program would be done while I am in my second trimester.  The other option would be to delay and then probably wait until kiddos are in school (5+ years).  But my goal is to be out of OK before kiddies start school (or at least 1st grade), so again, this is the "best" time to do it for many reasons.  It'll be tough and I know there will be times I seriously question my sanity, but I also don't want to back down from this challenge out of fear only to be kicking myself with regret 5 years from now, KWIM?

  • i think you can do it!! it is all about maximizing your efficiency.  you just won't have time to procrastinate like "the good ole days" back in college ;) it is nice that you have both J and your mom to help you out when you need it so that if studying when she is sleeping isn't enough, you can still study some more. based on what you've said, i do think now is the best time to do this... so just give it your best and see what happens :)

  • I know it's not exactly the same, but I worked full-time while doing my MBA.  It made for very full days, but you somehow find the time to make it work.  My boss was one of the ones who encouraged me to do it -- he said he always wanted to get his MBA, but it always got pushed back due to starting a family and other commitments.  20 years later, he still hasn't done it.  So, if it is something that you really want to do and feel like now would be the best time, go for it!  I think having the full support of your mom and husband will really help too.  If it turns out that it is too much, maybe then you can put it off until the kids are a little older, but at least you gave it a try!

  • Yeah, I was gonna say...that it's great that your mom is with you guys and can help you guys out so much with Libby, so you're right that this really is the best time for you to do it in many ways. Btw, congrats on getting into the program! Go you =) If you're still pumping, maybe you can also study when pumping (do you have one of those hands-free bras? I made myself one out of an old bra and my pumping session becomes one of the few times I can nest/bump =P)? Either way, I know you'll make it work. GL!

  • LORI!!  Congratulations on getting into you MBA!

Despite the insanity it will all be worth it!  And you're right this is the "best" time (if there ever really is a good time?!).  I've been thining about going back to school and you've really inspired me to take a serious look at it.

Thanks ladies...it's nice to know you're rooting for me!

Teri...I swear, with all of the online options out there I wonder why more people aren't going for it.  I have only been out of school for 10 years but I feel so "out of the loop" concerning eLearning (despite designing distance learning for my job!)...my DH is essentially earning his RN online (he does have clincial classes that he has to attend in person and some "blended" science classes with online lectures/in-person labs)...the only way I can even do this MBA is that it is 100% online.  It is also accelerated, so you take 2 classes each quarter, but only one class at a time (for 5 weeks straight)...6 quarters and 12 classes later...you're done!  18 months! What would you go back to school to study?

Jaime...you are SO right.  Try and see what happens.  That's my mantra.  I figure if I get going and it's too much, at least I tried.  And I can always do some classes now and if I decide I am in over my head, they'll "count" for later if I want them to.

  • i have every confidence that you can do it Lori Smile  i agree it's all about maximizing efficiency and not wasting time.  but just make sure you're not go-go-go all the time, and are able to take a little bit of time for yourself to relax and unwind from time to time!
