NBR: Best anti-virus and other computer protection

First, my rant: So my DH has a Mac & I have a PC. He used to be really good about keeping my computer safe, but lately he doesn't seem to care (which REALLY irritates me). He just keeps telling me that I should just get a Mac b/c they don't have issues. OK, well they're not cheap, we don't have the money for a new one (rather, I'd prefer to put that money elsewhere) & I love my PC laptop, it's not quite 2 years old, so it's staying around for a while. So that's NOT an option! UGH!!!!

OK, rant over...I need some help with anti-virus and other PC computer protection. Evidently my gmail got hacked and now I'm trying to be really careful about everything else. Any suggestions?? Help!!!

  • We use Avast! Anti virus. It's a free program and we have had no issues with it. DH does a lot of downloading and it has always caught viruses before they infected our computers.

  • Loading the player...
  • Becki - I have Avast on my computer (DH did download that for me a while ago), but some portion of it has expired & I have to pay to subscribe for that portion. Maybe it's malware? Not sure...thoughts??
  • I think when you download the new version, you have to look carefully for the free version. I seem to remember it was a tiny link in the corner. They do have some subscription/fee services, but we just use the free stuff.

  • We use AVG and Zone Alarm, both of with are free.
  • I use Microsoft Security Essentials. It's free. But besides that plus, it auto-updates and - by all the techie accounts - just as good as Norton or any of the others. I also keep a Malwarebytes copy just in case since they are fantastic at wiping out any weird little things that backdoor their way in.

  • Thanks ladies! DH finally worked some computer magic, scanned my computer with a new free download of one of the things mentioned below, found a Trojan (yikes!), and now it's all better (hopefully). Hooray! :)

AVG seemed to slow my computer down a lot. It's not that fast to begin with so that may be part of the problem :)
