What is your OB telling you to gain?

Someone else's (Carlybella's?) post got me thinking... What are your OBs telling you is appropriate pregnancy weight gain?

When I'm not pregant, I'm one of those people who looks slightly underweight, but is actually within healthy range (I have a lot of muscle, so even doctors guess my weight at 10-15 lbs less than it really is).  Due to being intensely hungry, off metformin (which controlled my obesity-causing metabolic disorder), and not having vomited once this entire pregnancy, I was up 13 lbs at my 16 week appointment.

This made my OB tweek - she said I was only supposed to gain 15-20 lbs during a pregnancy, and basically blamed pregnancy weight gain on the obesity epidemic in our country.  Her tirade would have been laughable actually if it were, say, a Mad TV sketch or something.

Now I come on here and read that the same weight gain cap is being given to an expectant mom who says she is overweight.  Before I got PG, I was a size 2, 120 lbs at 5 foot 3, which doesn't really fall into that category.

  • I was told 25-30 last time. This time (diff practice) they haven't given me a range. I assume they will tell me if they are worried, but I'll be ok with the 25-30 again. I lost 17 before I left the hospital, so it really didn't seem like that much in the long run.

  • I'm 5'9" and weighed 127 before pregnancy. My midwife advised me to gain between 25-30lbs. I've only gained 4 so far, I'm at 18 weeks. I'm not sure what they base it off of, but you mentioned taking a medication to control a obesity causing metabolic disorder, so maybe that has something to do with it.

  • I started out at your size and was told 25-30.  If you've gained 13 lbs already, it's something to keep an eye on (since the most weight is gained in the latter 2nd and 3rd trimesters).  But I think she's being overly strict on the overall gain.

  • Yikes. Judgmental much?? How rude of your OB to say that. I had gained 12 pounds by my 16 week appointment (5'7, 135 pre-pregnancy) and my OB said she wasn't worried at all, especially since I've stayed active. She said gaining around 35 lbs for me was healthy and nothing to worry about.

There are ALOT more things that one could blame the obesity epidemic on besides pregnancy weight gain. What a moron.

  • My "healthy" weight gain has been conveyed to me to be 25-35 pounds total. I was at a healthy BMI before getting pregnant and in my normal weight range for my height.

  • My OB told me 25-30 lbs. I'm 5'8'' and started out around 150 or 155 (no one can believe I weigh this much, maybe I have heavy bones? Stick out tongue) I've only gained 5 +/- lbs so far. However, my sister is shorter and smaller than me and gained 70+ pounds during her pregnancy last year.

She is a very healthy eater, but she was just extremely hungry. She gained 15 lbs in her first trimester. She lost almost all of the weight 4 months after having my niece, though. I think the guidelines are good, but everyone's body is different.

  • I gained 40 pounds my last pregnancy and my OB never said a thing. I think I am more worried about it then they are. I have gain 12 pounds so far and have been trying to stay active and go to the gym at least 2-3 times a week. I have never had the OB office say anything about my weight or even tell me how much to gain.
  • I was 105 pp, and gained 10 so far.  The doc said I should gain between 25 and 35 lbs.

That  might be counterproductive, LOL... My pancreas makes way too much insulin (which unchecked causes obesity and has caused my diabetes).  I'm not obese, though, bc when not PG I take a medication that slows insulin production/forces my body to use what it does make. You allegedly can't take it when you're pregnant, since it's a Cat B (and YES, that was my OB who was pissed I wouldn't take Cat C).

Before I got dx'd with the condition, I'd put on 40 lbs in 3 months restricting my eating and exercising like a fiend.  When I started on it, I lost like 50 lbs in 3 months. So to be honest, I feel she should be surprised I've gained only 13 lbs, when I've been off the meds for 2 months now.

Like Craven, I get the "you weigh THAT much?! more power to you" reaction for my numbers in general.

  • My doc just reminds me NOT to gain 65 pounds like last time. He had to put me on a diet :/

So far I've gained 5 so I'm doing well. He recommends 30 tops.

  • I was underweight at the start of my pregnancy (had been trying to gain but unsuccessfully). My OB wants me to gain 35-40. I'd gained 12 at my last appointment. I don't think I'll make 40 but I'd be happy with 30ish.

  • My OB didn't give me a specific number. I was up 13 at my last appointment (15 weeks) and he said to keep an eye on things; it was a little more than he liked. But he still didn't give me a specific number of pounds. I was overweight pre-preg.

  • My ob hasnt said anything about how much i should gain at all but that probably cause Ive lost 30 lbs since i got pregnant which makes no sense to me bc all i do is eat ! But anytime i mention the weight lost she said i should start gaining it back really soon so dont worry. And the baby is prefectly fine so far!

  • I have found that each doctore is different, some are still old school and go with higher weight limits and some go with lighter guidlines, I met with a High risk doctor who basically said each person is different depending on weight history,  current weight etc.  They advised me 10-15 lbs. My sisters doc is concerned that she is not gaining enough weight and she is overweight to begin with.

  • Oh goodness, calm down Dr!  I started at about the same 120 with each of my three pregnancies and am 5'5".  I put on 40lbs with the first...lost it all in 6 months was in a bikini.  Put on 35lbs with the second...lost it all again.  Started at 120 again this time.  Up 9lbs now at 17 weeks.  Usually I was up a lb a week though so I would normally be at 17lbs already!  I had 2 big babies.  My DH is 6'8".  Everyone is different.
  • I was told 25-30 lbs and I started out at 125, 5'7. My OB pretty much said that as long as you staying active and heating healthy your body will do what it needs to so don't stress out over it. If there every comes a time that she is concerned about my weight gain(or lack of) she will talk to me about it.  I have gained 6lbs right now but I did lose 2-3 since entering 2nd tri.

  • I started out at 5'5", 140 and my OB told me 25-30.  I'm shooting for 20-25 though because I have a lot of trouble losing weight and I don't want to struggle forever with those last 5 pounds.  At almost 18w, I'm still at 140, I lost a few pounds in the 1st trimester but have since regained my appetite and then some.
  • My doctor hasn't mentioned anything but I keep reading that 25-35 is good. I'm trying to aim for closer to 25 by staying active and eating decently but I'm sure my body will decide what it's going to do. I'm 5'7'' and I was 128 pre-pregnancy and so far I've gained ~6lbs.

  • My doctor told me 25-30 pounds.  I started off at 5'7", 125 - at my 18 week appt. I had gained 9 pounds.  I am trying to stay in the 1lb per week range - that would have me at 30 pounds by 40 weeks.
  • I was told only 5 lbs before 20 weeks and a lb a week after that.

  • I was 5'5 125ish at conception.  I gained 13 lbs by 17th week.  I asked Dr. if I gained too much because I was afraid that I had.  She said, NO WAY, you are perfect, so God only knows.

  • I am 5' 6" and 167 lbs to start.  My OB told me that I could go this entire pregnancy and not gain any weight at all and be fine.  I am currently 17 weeks and I am down 2lbs.  With my last baby I started at 163 and gained a total of 15 lbs and lost all of it in the hospital.
