So, I must be hormonal. And hopefully the good KU kind, & not the yucky AF kind (sorry, Macey).
I just ran out of Rx PNVs & went to buy some new ones today (currently waiting for COBRA paperwork after leaving old, stressful job). I had my Rx transferred to the WalMart in the nearest town (about 12 miles away & my only real option or I wouldn't have done it). Then I found out that, without insurance, it'd be $37 a month. Which I shouldn't complain about if I'm trying to have a kid, I know. But holy cow.
So I scanned the OTC PNVs (slim pickins) & found a Spring Valley brand one + an algae-based DHA supplement (very happy vegetarian!!!). When I got home, I found out that Spring Valley is just Wal-Mart brand in disguise, & it's a crappy PNV (which the $4 price tag should've told me, ::facepalm::).
So I freaked out & decided I needed a new PNV ASAP! Jumped back in the car, went back into town & went to a CVS. Found "Rainbow Light" brand, which is Vegan! But I was scared to death that it still wasn't good enough after my Wal-Mart misfortune. Happily, when I got home, I found that it got great reviews...which is fantastic, since it's Vegan, too!
I know this is a long post but, FFS, what is wrong with me?!?
If anyone else is doing OTC PNVs & would like to share your preferences & why, please post away. And thanks for reading...I knew this story would only be appreciated here.
Re: PNV Freakout (long)
Thank you, ladies, for all of your input! I probably just could've taken the stupid Wal-Mart vitamins & been fine.
But I get extra worried since I don't eat meat + still have guilt that maybe I did something wrong last time (even though I was on Rx PNVs, don't want that to be a lingering doubt this time).
And I miss having a Target nearby...JEALOUS!!!
I take the crappy Walmart brand {{{face palm}}}. I am going to have to read through the label more thoroughly. My RE's office said on Friday at our injectible class to just make sure we were taking one with at least 400 mcg of Folic Acid. Once we were confirmed pregnant then they would put us on prescription PNV's so no real concern about which one you're taking now except that is has enough Folic Acid.
And please Lord send me the yucky AF and I'll gladly send a BFP. lol
Macey, I think I suffer from the "a little knowledge is a dangerous thing" syndrome here. The big thing I was worried about wasn't so much what the label said, but what the absorbability is like & how much actually gets into your bloodstream. You can have two drugs/supplements with the EXACT same ingredients at the EXACT same doses & they work TOTALLY DIFFERENTLY in your body! (In fact, generic drugs only need to have, I think, 25% of the "bioavailability" of the brand name drug, so sometimes it DOES make a difference which one you take.)
Of course, vitamins & supplements aren't regulated by the FDA
so a lot of times we have no idea of just how well they actually work. And I know the internet is a font of misinformation, so trying to find anything reliable in a panic was NOT happening. But this is the website where I was trying to at least get some sort of comparison (the link is to their description of the PNV I wound up getting):
https://prenatalvitamins.net/rainbow-light-prenatal-one-multivitamin/
Hardly the AMA or a clinical trial, but it was something. (And I feel like it may be a disguise for the companies that sell the "top" PNV brands, because I found several more sites almost exactly like this that recommended the same two brands...fishy.)
So, no, my conclusions were not terribly scientific. Or scientific at all. But it made me sleep better last night.
I'm sure what you're doing is just fine...especially if your RE is down with it! But if you have any concerns, you might want to ask for the PNV Rx a little sooner; they tend to be cheaper with most insurance policies, too.
Sorry that was so long, but I thought I should elaborate on my thinking a little more. Hope this helps. Oh, & I WILL DO MY DANGDEST to send you my AF this month...but you might have to wait until Sunday (POAS day!), if that's okay.
