Baseline fitness test question

Tomorrow and Friday I am doing a program through work called Full Engagement Training (20 hrs PAID woohoo!). From what I have heard it pretty much teaches you how to better balance work, home, personal and spiritual life with a focus on wellness and nutrition. So tonight I have to go to the gym and sit in the "Bod-Pod" which will measure my body fat, similar to the hydrostatic water tanks (I think that is what they are called). In addition, I have to do a baseline fitness test to include as many sit-ups, push-ups and weight lift as you can. I know they say, whatever you did before pregnancy is safe to do during it... I have been SUPER lazy lately and have been doing NOTHING. So my question.... what is safe to do this afternoon with the fitness test?

Re: Baseline fitness test question

  • I have read that as long as you keep your breathing at a level where you can still talk then it is ok. Also you aren't supposed to go over 140 on your heart rate. I just wouldn't be trying to prove anything. Just do what you can and keep under these guidelines. Good luck!

  • You might want to consider telling the person adminstering the fitness tests that your pregnant.  Hopefully it's not someone from work and they will keep your secret.  (unless of course you've told everyone already)

This! I would definitely tell the administrator I was pregnant.

  • Listen to your body and do not push yourself.  I would go very easy on the weights.  My doctor told me no more than 20 pounds, and I work out regulary with more than that, but she still said no more than 20.  Also, don't get upset with the results. It is actually easier said than done, especially if they reveal any results as a large group.  Sit ups and push ups are fine, but again listen to your body.

  • It is not someone from work, so I figured I would tell them. I am just not sure if they will know what I should do. I am thinking I will tell whoever it is that I am pregnant and then do what they ask, but just not full force... maybe skip on the lifting part though.

  • Stop whatever you are doing if you feel dizzy, out of breath, nauseous, or feel any cramping. Those are clues you are pushing yourself too hard.
  • My doctor gave me no restrictions for working out, except to avoid lifting heavy weights above my head. So for me and my physical level, she said to drop my free weights to 20lbs or less.

As far as the heart rate thing is concerned, I know pregnant women who are training for a marathon, so I think it depends on who are you and what your activity level is.

Obviously make sure you bring lots of water!
