2nd Trimester

just signed up for birthing classes....

asked my dr. yesterday when I should start thinking about them (I'm 20 weeks) and she said I should sign up for them then...it's reminding me of how quickly time is going...they don't start until the beginning of november but still...i'm freaking out a bit...i've never even changed a diaper...thank goodness the hubby is good with kids...has anyone else started the classes? Anything to be prepared for (except a lot of dumb questions)?

Re: just signed up for birthing classes....

  • I don't think birthing classes teach you infant care. They're mostly preparing you for labor and actual delivery. The hospitals around here have seperate infant care course that cover diapering, bathing, and troubleshooting.

  • I was just thinking when we should sign up.  I guess I will within a month.
  • I teach Lamaze classes- we do basic baby care in our classes. One thing that I would say be prepared for (if you are taking a private class, some hospital classes don't do them) is learning relaxations. I teach that relaxations are the key to being on top of your contractions. Good luck to you! I hope you have a great experience in class.
  • I signed up for a one-day birth prep class that is taking place next Saturday. I wanted to do the series the hospital has combining the birth prep and baby care, but it wasn't going to work with my DH's job schedule. They offer the child prep and breastfeeding classes separately, so I will take those in October.

I'm not particularly prepared for the class ahead of time. I'm going into it with 2 pillows, a blanket and an open mind. I'm sure I'll have a list of questions by the time the class rolls around.

  • I have my second class today. Not much to do preparation wise. Just come in comfy clothes with a pillow and be ready to learn.

Oh I forgot, if this is your first baby, you think you have some idea of what labor and delivery is like until you see the videos. Whoa!
