ROP eye sugery success stories, please!

We found out today that Andrew is having laser eye surgery tomorrow for ROP.  It progressed to stage 3 and they want to treat now.  We know the sugery has a high success rate, but some real stories will ease my mind for tomorrow.

Thanks!

Re: ROP eye sugery success stories, please!

  • Well i know how you feel - about 3.5 months ago I was in the same place looking for SOME answers - anything I could hold onto .. but from personal experience everything will get better!!

LO had stage 4 level 4 ; and went for surgery the next day .. i had NO time to prepare,to do anything really - I had just enough time to get rid of the sick feeling in my stomach .. It was a 4.5 hour procedure with our LO for a few reasons (they had a hard time in-abating him, sedation etc) the healing process was also a very rough road for LO (he was 38wks then, born at 30) - and had NEVER been in-abated - his body gave up breathing once he came off the anesthetics/drugs of all sorts - morphine,Tylenol, gravel etc.. it was really hard watching LO be a completely different person.

Our stay was longer than most - 9 Days .. but that was ONLY because LO didn't want to breathe and the one time they did try to excavate him he gave up and that only made them MORE worried. HOWEVER to date - he is doing GREAT!
We were going to eye clinics regularly for about two months, three times a week - down to twice a week, once a week - once every two weeks .. now we're at once every THREE months! It's fantastic.

Embrace the other mom's that are going threw the same thing as you at the time. It was one thing i DIDN'T do at the NICU, but did do while in the PICU. Experience helps you get through it ; Your LO is strong!! Don't worry - It's for the better this way!!

Best of luck ; thoughts for you and your family!!

  • Thanks for the personal story, mommysmurf.  We are hoping to avoid reintubation...that is one of my big fears.

Also thanks for the good wishes ladies!  I hope it is an uneventful surgery!

  • My lo did not have rop but friends of ours did and they were back in the nicu in no time at all.  Were not reintubated and recovered really well.  The baby is doing really well.
