North Dakota Babies

Is this ok?

I'm going down to my parents' house this weekend because Sat night I'm going to party it up in AC with my girlfriends.

I will be drinking... not heavily because I cannot stomach the idea of dumping my b-milk. I've done it a couple of times and it just doesn't seem worth it to me.

My mom will be "watching" Mari Sat night - Mari will be asleep but will most likely wake up once or twice to eat.  I've been having a massive problem with my frozen b-milk and am unsure it will be ok for her to consume (I don't know how many of you read my excess lipase post - I'm having to scald my milk immediately after pumping because it goes bad in no time before it's even frozen.)

Would it be ok to leave two bottles of formula for her?

And if I did, how do I know how much to give her and what kind to give her.

I got a box of Similac sent to my house and it's right now in the closet as a just in case and my mom as a container of Enfimil that was sent to her.

What would you do?

ETA: I'm thinking if the occasional formula thing works, I'd really like to give up pumping to save my milk because apparently it's useless.

Re: Is this ok?

  • Has she ever had formula before? If not I would not do it..sometimes Formula is hard on their little bodies, and you do not want her to go through that while you are gone....

You could always do 1/2 BM and 1/2 formula if that is an option OR give her a couple bottles of formula before Saturday and see how she does....

  • I have never pumped.  If I ever need to give a bottle I always just give a bottle of formula.  With both of the kids I have used Similac because Rowen had issues with the Enfimal.  His pediatrician said its fine to do that.  I always just mixed up between 4-8 oz depending on age and if he didn't eat it all it wasn't a big deal to me.  I would think that Mari would probably take more than 4 but I could be wrong.  Try giving 4 and if she still wants more you can always make more.

  • The first night in the hospital she had Enfimil Lipil (or something like that), but that's the only time she's had it...

I think she takes like 5 oz at a time, but I can be way off... but you're right, if I make 6 and she doesn't finish it, who cares, right?

I thought about trying it out between now and then, but I didn't want to waste a feeding (I guess I could just pump and scald in between - SO.friggin.ANNOYING!).

  • I have friends that switch between formula and BM with no issues.  Their babies never had any problems and they never did the slow conversion.  (I have never done this and have no idea really what I am talking about.)

I would definitly try it before you take her to your mom's.  That way if she rejects it you could give her to boob and try a different formula.

And how did you find out your milk had too much lipase in it?  Sorry if you already talked about that.

  • Ashley, could you ask them for me?? Ask them how they did it - was it like a gradual thing or what.

About the BM... It smells rancid after it comes from the freezer. And she won't drink it. And I mean, it really stinks. But it's a hit or miss - sometimes it smells fine, sometimes it starts stinking after an hour, sometimes it reeks straight from the bag when I thaw it. The only way to help the issue is to scald it immediately after pumping Which is not exactly what I want to be doing at 4am when I pump. Also, I have no idea if I'm scalding it correctly and since it's really a hit or miss with it souring, it might be sour even after scalded if I didn't do it right. I'm willing to go all out for Mari to have b-milk, but I reallyfeel when it's a guessin game like this, it just isn't worth it for a couple of bottles here and there. kWIM?
  • That is so tragic.

I will def ask my ladies how they did it and report back.

  • I switched back & forth all the time. On my days that I had such little BM output I would do all formula , and some days she would have all BM. E was super sensitive to formula so I have her on enfamil gentlease (sp?). I tried a few types of simlac & most of them made her fussy, except the red one, sorry no idea on name there. Hands down the best bm/formula combo seemedto be w/ gentlease. Stay away from the AR enfamil, it's the sane as the bedtime formula just marketed differently. It'll knock her, unless that's what you want.

ac sounds super fun, I hope you have a good time :)
