appetite changes - should I be concerned?

The past two days Anne hasb't been taking as much at daycare - only 7.5 oz yesterday and 10oz. today, down from an avg of about 12-15oz a day.  She has also started sucking her thumb (like, literally started out of the blue on friday and does it a lot now)

I just fed her and i had to break the suction on her thumb with my finger so that she would nurse.  I usually wait for hunger cues but she was ready to fall asleep and it had been 4hours since she last had anything, and even then she had only taken the 10oz all day.

Should I be concerned?

  • additional thoughts - she's also slept a lot during the past two days and has been laying her head on my shoulder (heart melts).  I've taken her temp several times, but she doesn't appear to have a fever.  I suspected possible teething but i can't see/feel anything, although a mom friend of mine claims she saw a tooth bud on sun.

  • Could be teething.  Isabella eats less and sleeps more when she's teething. When she first started sucking her thumb sometimes I had to remove it so I could nurse, or she would try to nurse AND suck her thumb at the same time.  It was like she was so excited that she'd just discovered her thumb or something.

Has she been acting differently otherwise, fussy, etc? As long as she seems content, isn't running a temp, and is having normal diapers I might give it a couple days. If you're having concerns just call the pedi's office and tell them your concerns.  They'll tell you if they think she needs to come in.

This describes her perfectly right now!

And for the most part, she's been acting normally in every other regard.  We've had a little more of a struggle at bed time than we did last week, but nothing is "usual" as far as that goes.  I may just monitor her the  next couple of days and then call the pedi if I'm still worried.  Thanks for the input!

  • Sounds like teething - teething symptoms can last a long time (month, more?) before they are visible!

I wouldn't worry at all if she's hydrated and generally happy.
