Infertility

Ovidrel in comparison to IVF Shots

Ok Ladies... I don't do needles. I know most people don't... but it's to the point where if I'm not laying down when they take blood I pass out. At the sight of a needle I can go white and faint.

So needless to say I completely FREAKED out when my DH had to give me my ovidrel injection last month. It stung... I could seriously feel it. lol

Anyways... our RE has pretty much told us this last IUI is worthless, but to satisfy DH's fertility specialist we are going through with it. He has said IVF is pretty much the only way to go. From research I know there are weeks of shots, multiple times per day.

Here's the question: For you ladies who have been or are going through this, how does it compare to the ovidrel injection? Worse? Give it to me honest, but not scared to the point of not having children! I've joked with the dH many times about how we will just not have babies if I have to go through shots multiple times a day for ever!

 Thanks in advance all!

Re: Ovidrel in comparison to IVF Shots

  • I've only done ovirdril and lupron so far, I start follistim and menopur tomorrow.  The lupron is really easy.  It is a very small needle and doesn't really hurt.  The pinch I give my skin hurts much worse.   The ovidrel was worse than the lupron.

I can give more specifics after tomorrow night.

     Good luck!

  • Other than the progesterone in oil shot, the shots themselves shouldn't hurt too much more than Ovidrel.  I've done Bravelle for my 2 IUI cycles and it actually hurt less than Ovidrel.

I can't wait for the "im getting a divorce" post in 5 years or so because your husbands were fed up with your disgusting chair asses from playing on the knot all day and getting fired 4-5 times for not doing any work. you guys are all winners!! ~ Laur929

  • The gonal F needle was tiny and not painful. The cetrotide was a little bigger, a little more stingy, but still okay. I actually can't remember how long the ovidrel needle was, but I think it was the longest so far. I was in Costa Rica and the Dr had me use progesterone injections witch were the worst. Very long needle in the rear and it hurt sometimes and was sore later. I don't think that all Dr.s prescribe progesterone shots though since you can take it with a suppository instead.

  • I think it varies from one person to the next.

For me, the Lupron shots stung more than the Bravelle & Menopur but I would have to say the Ovidrel stung the worst out of all of them. You become an expert real quick with giving yourself a shot & will get over the "fear" rather quickly also! Wishing you lots of luck....

  • Hahaha!  I just did my Ovidrel shot a couple hours ago and thought the same thing!  What if this IUI doesn't work and I have to move onto IVF...what are those shots like??

GL and thanks for asking this question!

  • With my last IVF cycle, I did 63 shots total.  That is more than the norm.

Depending on your protocol and how long you stim, it will vary.  You will also have your blood drawn at each monitoring appointment (usually about 5-6 appointments) and then blood drawn at each monitoring appointment after ET.  I usually went 3 times a week after ET.

I did Lupron for 10 days prior to stims.  I stim for 13 days (which is pretty long).  Then there is a trigger shot.  Then after, I will do PIO until BFN or 12 weeks gestation.  So the shots are longer than just a week typically.

For shots in the stomach, I lay on my back so that I can't tense up or pull away.  Shots in the stomach are the easiest.  The needles are fairly small.  Sometimes the medicine with sting or itch, but it doesn't last too long.

The shots in the rear, well, those are much bigger needles.  I just don't look at the needle. The needles are worse than the actually shot.  I lay on my stomach so that I don't tense up my rear end.  You may be able to do progesterone suppositories.  It depends on the RE.  I prefer the PIO because it can be more accurately be monitored by bloodwork.

This may seem scary, but you will find the strength.  I always think about those with diabetes who give themselves daily shots.  They find the strength.  You will too.

  • THank you all for replying. I Luckly have a DH that is more than willing to stick me (I'm not sure if that helps me feel better or worse, lol ). So needless to say I won't be sticking myself. It wouldn't happen.... Years ago (10 plus) they thought I could be diabetic and I had to stick my finger a few times per day... I couldn't do it, and we all know that thing is tiny.

Again Thank you all for your responses!!!!!

  • I did Follistim once a day for 9 days on my last IUI cycle, then Ovidrel. The follistim didn't hurt at all and the needle is tiny. DH does my injections. I lay on my stomach and try to relax but I always get really nervous right before. They don't hurt at all though!

I am now moving on to IVF and will start stims next week: follistim+menopur then ganarelix and ovidrel. This one will be new to me, so I hope the shots aren't any worse!
